I don't know why this particular Christmas was so relaxing, but it was.
I have cooked, which I enjoy when there is no huge pressure to perform and there are lots of friends and family to make it convivial. I browsed through my new cook books and experimented with recipes. I have watched loads of movies curled up in front of the fire - some good, some not so good, and I have managed to finish reading a couple of books. One of the things I love the most is getting immersed in a good book and loosing track of the time. The beauty of the holidays is being able to read during the day and reading more than two pages at any one time.
And as for New Year's resolutions?
Yes I have made them (always do)- the obvious ones and the not so obvious ones and hopefully I will be able to maintain the discipline to achieve them! The one I am sure many women make is to loose those unwanted kilos. I was so inspired after reading Artie's post titled, 'New Year's Eve means Resolutions, on his blog Color Outside the Lines that I am full of willpower and determination. (Fingers crossed this new found strength makes it past January)
There is a gaining weight 'phenomenon' in Europe called the 'Heathrow injection' and it is a term that has been coined by Australians and New Zealanders who have spent an extended period of time working and holidaying in Europe. I first heard it some years ago in London and thought it a perfect description. The theory is that after touch down at Heathrow airport in London, from that day forward, your weight will balloon upwards of six or seven kilos!
Australians and New Zealanders are great travelers and for many it is customary, almost a right of passage after leaving school, university or work, to take this 'time-out' in Europe. It is the kind of trip that you save and save for - working all hours of the day and night to pay for that very expensive plane ticket. The general idea is to make it to London and find some cheap accommodation, generally with other ex-pats. A two-year visa means that the length of the trip is somewhere around that time with the first six months or so involving a job - any kind of job to earn those highly desirable pounds. (Well they used to be highly desirable.....) The working holiday begins and the weight piles on little by little, month after month - this is the consensus. I haven't actually canvassed this question with the male population yet, so I am not sure if it applies to them or not. So it would seem that the Heathrow injection is all about gaining pounds to earn pounds! It would also seem that once back home not only have the £££'s disappeared but the weight too.
So thanks to Artie's motivating resolution I am committed to loosing those unwanted kilos and saying goodbye to my 'Heathrow injection' for good.
I wish you all the happiest New Year and may our resolutions stay strong, xv.

I spent in London only four days, but in those days I lost two kilos.
ReplyDeleteIs it incredible, isn't it?
A great new year to you and to everyone!
Erica Lee from Italy.
Erica, it was probably because you missed the delicious Italian food and couldn't face the English fare! xv
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog! I decided about 6 weeks ago it was time to move unwanted kilo's and I have lost 6 so far! Even over Christmas!!! I made LOTS of changes and am not looking back. Good luck to you - I am sure you can do it!
ReplyDeleteKatrina x
Welcome back! Your time spent with your family sounds heavenly!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year.....Well my daughter and I have started to walk, 5 km 5 days a week...Will see how long that lasts (lol)...Can't wait to hear of your adventures in 2009...Love Cathy xx
ReplyDeleteI'm not quite clear here. Is there a relationship between the loss of pounds with the loss of poundage- $? Or rather your're saying that first you gain the weight while you work in London...then as your money goes down the weight goes down-bc you're starving? I'm taking this too literally. Better go back and see if there's a method...always a question...woulldn't you just love someone to say about you "She's quite slim really". ..sigh..family home time sounds enchanting...reading by the fire...catching up with the now adult-ish children (Do they ever seem adult?)I'm glad you had time off but I have missed your post. Stay to the course and the pounds (not poundage) will fall off.(Sorry it's the whole dollar/pound confusion that makes me keep obsessing with over word.) PS Heathrow injection seems like a cat shot to me...(Heathrow =cat name)May you have a much disciplined willpower as you desire!
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a super Christmas...
ReplyDeleteI wonder what the term used for all the weight that piles on when one first comes to France or Italy - I'm going back many years, but I vividly remember feeling hungry permanently on my first visits to both Provence and Tuscany - everything was (and still is) just so tempting and scrumptious to eat..!
Happy New Year and Good Luck with your resolutions..:)
Dear Vicki, thanks for your kind comment on my blog. I love the candles you have on your header, what brand are they?
ReplyDeleteI've lived in London now for 6 1/2 years and I definately had the Heathrow injection problem when I first arrived, but within a year I had lost the weight. I think alot of the reason people coming over on the working hol visa put on a lot of weight is a lot of beer and partying.......!
Oh yes...the New Year's weight resolution. Hoping the daily walks with our dog will do some good!
ReplyDeleteLove the image...not surprised it's Ralph Lauren!
Sounds like you had a lovely holiday. I had a restful one as well (I can't remember the last time).
ReplyDeleteI cooked a LOT and ate more. I don't usually. And because I'm one of the only people in the house who eats sweets, I think I ate them all (and I'm thinking of making more). Keep repeating, cleansing Miso...
All this sitting and reading doesn't help! That is the post I am writing today as well. :-)
I'm giving up chocolate for breakfast. So sad about that. I have to say that I'm not too happy about all the work it will take to get my body back after the long recuperation. To feel good without chocolate is the goal! Glad you had such a wonderful holiday with your family.
ReplyDeleteCatherine
Does this mean chocolate is not included on the diet!! Shame about that - will we ever feel good without chocolate?? xv
ReplyDeleteLovely photo! So glad you enjoyed the holidays and hope that 2009 is a spectacular year for you, Vicki!
ReplyDeleteWonderful year to you , Vicky!
ReplyDeletethis morning, by putting on my pants , I made a resolution :LOOSING WEIGHT !!
Your post comes on the heels of last nights' dream ... . in which a very attractive man put me on a scale, and then assured me I "could do it!"
ReplyDeleteGuess that's all the confirmation I need :
I MUST DO IT!!!

My favorite line in this post is 'losing track of time while reading a book and being able to read more than 2 pages at a time', So true!
ReplyDeleteI do believe everyone is feeling weight loss determined today! No matter how they choose to title it! Success to us all!!
ReplyDeleteI do wish you a truly Happy New Year! Full of good health, peace and all sorts of joy!
I have read that on average we put on two pounds a year as we age. In my younger years, I was never any bigger than a size 7/8. If you could see me now you would be able to see the two pounds a year theory. Blame it on anything you want but it becomes increasingly harder each year to remove this poundage!! I am living proof! LOL
ReplyDeleteVicki~ You've enjoyed a special holiday with your family. I too, have the bittersweet feeling when I have to take down all of our holiday adornments.
ReplyDeleteAt this time of year, we can find great comfort in a good book to get lost in. I think that is what the cold winter months were meant for. Getting back into our routines can help- especially if we get out a move a bit- I go to the gym early in the morning and then feel ever so much better about curling up with my book in the afternoon.
I have enjoyed your book and have given it to two friends as holiday gifts. It's perfect for these snowy, cold days in front of a fire. Thank you~
Greetings icki! So good to hear you were not only relaxing this year but most importantly with your family!
ReplyDeleteI don't know what our problem is in America with gaining some unwanted Kilos but I'm off to visit that post. Maybe I'll get some of that determination and willpower! Wonderful post and I hope your year continues to be blessesd!
xoxo
Judith~
So glad you had such a lovely holiday.. that is the best way to spend it. I still have to take down all the decorations but I'm not in a huge rush. I always seem to lose a little in Europe too but that is because of all the walking.. we don't walk as much in these parts, sadly! And of course I am not there very long so that makes a difference too.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year.. I know you will do great with your resolutions!
xx Trina
Happy New Year Vicki! Glad you got to enjoy a relaxing Christmas with your family! We also had a relaxing day with all the family - great spending time together! Tracey x
ReplyDeleteHi Vicki, what a wonderful time you seem to have had, some cherished time and the opportunity to build memories. Good luck with the resolutions. I have heard that very dark chocolate in small amounts is actually very good(or so I keep telling myself) hugs Margie.
ReplyDeleteVicki,
ReplyDeleteI am so happy to hear that you were able to get in some well deserved R & R over the Christmas holiday. Good luck with all of your New Years resoluations! You have my full support and encouragement.
Bonne Année 2009,
Kelli
Your Christmas sounds like the perfect sort to me!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try to get on Artie's bandwagon and lose a few lbs myself, but my one and only resolution this year is simply to "do my best" It's not always perfect, but sometimes your best just has to be good enough! Less pressure in my perfectionist world that i'm trying to disintangle from!
xo Isa
ps. that photo is my very favorite RL room!
Oh it sounds like the holiday was Heavenly for you! Sounds so cozy and convivial!
ReplyDeleteTo your loss of pounds and othe esolutions for 2009!!
Have you ever been to see Joel Durand in St Remy? We got chocolates from him for my wedding. My mom is a friend of his...she lives in France for several months of the year. Love your blog.
ReplyDeleteyeah, i am happy you are back.
ReplyDeleteGlad you had such a wonderful holiday!!!!
I did a lot of reading and relaxing too. finished you book! love every minute of it. *sigh* I miss France!

callie
okay thats it Im officially dieting tomorrow you have me totally inspired. I have so missed your blog and I've spent the last half an hour going through your past posts, the markets, the gorgeous xmas wreaths I could go on and on...so inspired we have decided to move house and move to the Byron Bay hinterland, we have lots to consider and the timings not quiet right but life is to short and it doesn't mean it has to be for ever and who knows I may never want to leave. Thank you for a year of amazing inspiration and for bringing France to our homes x
ReplyDeleteHappy New Years to you, Vicky.I hope your New Year is filed with lots of reading, relaxing and feeling cozy.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you, Vicki! In the US we don't have a wonderful saying like the "Heathrow injection"! Somehow that makes it sound so much better than "I ate too much and now I'm in trouble". Your blog has made my last year wonderful so thank you for that. I hope world-wide, we all have a less painful 2009. In the US we have voted in hope for 2009 and I wish for that hope to spread world wide. I know your blog will be sun shine in my daily life for the next year. I wish all the blessing possible to flow like fine wine over you and your family.
ReplyDeleteI'm so pleased to hear that you had such a calming, relaxing holiday Vicki! You really deserved it after what sounds like a really busy year.
ReplyDeleteAs for that 'heathrow injection'--I hear you! having just been married in august, i'm suffering from a total lack of motivation to exercise and eat anything other than ice cream. it seems that when there isn't a white dress and lots of photos looming in your future, your motivation goes out the window!
so here's to making 2009 the year to get back on track :)

Happy New year to you too. I'm glad you had a wonderful holiday. Good luck with the kilos.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Vicki! Best of luck with the resolutions- mine is to introduce more whole foods into my diet and cut out the crap... a fanciful notion, but hopefully one that will stick :)
ReplyDeleteA lovely way to spend the holidays amongst family, friends and some books...bliss!!!
ReplyDelete'tis the season Vicki!
ReplyDeleteI am giving myself a week before I even look at a scale. Things aren't very slim here in Los Angeles either!
xo
Brooke
Funny...I always get it the other way around. Everytime I come over here to Australia from America, I put on sooo much weight, and then lose it again when I go back. I'm going back soon, and I can't WAIT to lose it all again! :p
ReplyDeleteForgot to add, Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteBonjour mon ami!
ReplyDeleteI feel so empathetic to your post...
as we too have gone through much of the same and pondered these matters...
For me...I am finding exercise in the form of "remodel" LOL and we are hard at work here at the little, Painted Nest.
Im a New Zealander and went to boarding school in England for many years. At that stage I was too young to get the Heathrow injection but when I moved to LA, I think I got the LAX injection. Luckily that has left me.
ReplyDeleteHi Vicki,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your article in a magazine ( can't recall the name) when you had just moved over to France and had bought your property.
As I am a New Zealander, I can relate to putting on weight while on a holiday in France, last year.
All that beautiful food.
That is why I am now doing my aerobics that has helped.
I look forward to visiting your blog again.
I enjoyed my visit ~ thank you.
Glad you had an enjoyable relaxing holiday with your family.
Carolyn
