and that Princess would be mine. My princess (second daughter) not to be confused with my angel (first daughter) and not forgetting adorable son, turned twenty one this week. I had all the thoughts and emotions that any mother has - how could she be twenty one - where did the years go - it was only yesterday that she started school and now she is about to graduate from university - and most shockingly of all, how did I become such a grown up.
I like to mark special occasions with something memorable and one of the gifts I have always given is perfume. I am a great lover of scent and believe that for every person there is the right fragrance. Fragrance is about so much more than a few dabs of alcohol on the wrists and a touch behind the ears - it is your signature and a sensory declaration of your taste; it is how you want to be noticed and how you wish to be remembered.
The scent of Lys Mediterranee by Frederic Malle is the fragrance that my birthday girl loves.
There are seventeen different fragrances that make up Editions de Parfums and these have been created by nine different noses or perfumers for Frederic Malle. These are some of my favourites as best described by the house of Frederic Malle.
'Iris expresses raw classic beauty. Tonka bean, musk and vanilla bring softness and warmth, while the base of sandalwood and vetiver adds a melodious resonance. If Pierre Bourdon's IRIS POUDRE were a garment, it would be a cashmere sweater - classic but personal, appropriate for most occasions, something one never tires of.'
'Dominique Ropion introduces a new essence of vetiver, stripped of it's bitter edge, which he matches with five woody notes to play up the scent's various facets. The result is something surprisingly fresh and crisp.'
'Inspired by the fleeting whiff of an angelica bouquet gathered just after a shower. Jean-Claude Ellena's arrangement plays out like a chamber music arrangement. One detects the sparkling, spicy tonic notes of this slightly musky flower, softened by a hint of juniper berries and coriander, and drying down to musk and cedar. ANGELIQUES SOUS LA PLUIE - a splash of emotion.'
'Imagine a scorching summer evening as the mediteranean sea spray mingles with the mildly spicy scent of ginger lillies. Edouard Flechier's creation is an impressionistic scent - a tribute to this opulent white flower - but done in a new way - with a fresh accent. Orange blossom gives wway to a top marine note. One inhales the froth of the lily with hints of musk and vanilla. Radiant.'
'With nature Tuberose offers her own take on dramatic olfactive clashes. These pretty flowers exude a mixture of flower shop freshness and carnal opulence. This natural contradiction has fascinated generations of perfumers and Dominique Ropion is no exception.'
'A fragrance carved with hefty chunks of cashmeran, sandalwood, musk and patchouli, reinforced with incense, softened with heliotrope, coloured with violet accord. An intimate but deep sensuality, an exalted skin scent, the real essence of the perfume.'
The holidays and the twenty first birthday celebrations are now over and my princess has left to start a new term at university, but when I enter her bedroom I can still detect the sweet lingering notes of her presence. This perfume is gentle and soft, sweet but not cloying and the merest hint makes me think of her.
Perfume is the trigger that takes me back, is it yours? xv
You are right about perfume , perfume is our signature!
ReplyDeleteI have to confess that I didn't know this brand but it seems very different ! Where do you find these perfumes ?
Oh I so wish I had you around as I can never buy perfume...I always seem to like the mens ones better and would never know what to choose for myself... I wouldn't know the first place to start...When I go to France in 2010 (daughter finishing school) I will have to try and find something that is my signature then....Take care Cathy
ReplyDeleteMelanie, They are available in Paris at the Frederic Malle Boutique and if you click on the link you will find the addresses. I am sure they have samples and perhaps they would send them. The perfumes are also sold in London at Les Scenteurs in Elizabeth Street, SW1. xv
ReplyDeletethat's so sweet, i wonder if my mum were thinking of the same for my 21st last year? as i got a perfume too, mums are the best!
ReplyDeletethese look like they're really good perfumes, the good thing about the less commercial (& prob better quality) ones is that there's smaller chance someone else will be wearing the same scent!
I've always loved the idea of a signature perfume scent...alas...I haven't found one yet...Does that mean I don't know who I am? When will I know? My daughter, youngest, turns 17 this weekend, she's already looking for universities...(She wants to go away from mommy?)I want her to be happy...and I love having her around. The perfume bottles got progressively closer (bigger) as your narrative of leaving progressed. You keep her close through scent...and doesn't the fragrance break your heart? Lovely post,Vicki.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you've described the importance of scent.
ReplyDeleteVicki~ I must find these and have a little snif. When I turned 18 my Mother gave me my first bottle of Chanel No.5. That scent takes me directly to my Mom and the long chats we use to have. I still always have a bottle of it- but it's not a fragrance I can wear everyday. I adore hearing the way to talk about your children.
ReplyDeleteD~
Which one of these is your favorite? They all sound lovely!
ReplyDeleteThe first year my daughter left for college, eight years ago now, I couldn't bear to see her empty room and had to keep the door shut for the first year.
Scent absolutely does take you back! Isn't it wonderful to detect the perfume of someone you love?
ReplyDeleteThe scents you've featured seem lovely, I have added them to my "Paris List". Have a nice weekend!
Happy birthday to your daughter! I've got the same feeling when it comes to my piano students. One minute, they're eight, with too big front teeth. The next minute, they're off to study medicine...
ReplyDeletewhen i smell chanel no 5 i think of my mum when i was a child.
ReplyDeleteI have wearing a perfum called child for the past few years, the scent reminds me of smells i remember from my childhood.
one day I would love to go to Paris and find a signature scent for myself.
Hi Vicki~
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to your Princess! So true about scents, when I think of my Grandma I can smell her perfume. Nice thing is I still feel like it still lingers on her items that are now mine. Such a light pretty scent that evokes the sweet southern proper lady she was. Thank you for the lovely memories!
A Beautiful Post! ~Miss Kris~
That's lovely! I don't have any daughters, sadly. However, on a visit to Saks awhile back, my youngest son discovered Acqua di Parma (Cary Grant's scent, I believe?). I haven't bought him a bottle yet--always there seems more practical things he needs--but it would be the perfect gift for a twenty-first birthday!
ReplyDeleteI don't live near a boutique that sells Frederic Malle, so I haven't tried many of its scents. But I think I need to go order some sample now!
Happy Birthday to your princess! My son turned 22 this week and I share your thoughts...he is the "baby". When our daughter got married I had her choose a perfume at the beginning of the wedding planning so she would always relate the scent to this magical time in her life. Each trip abroad, I always buy a perfume...the nose knows.
ReplyDeleteA very happy belated birthday to your princess! Perfume does have an amazing way of bringing back memories/associations. Food does very much the same thing for me. Have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteOh yes. I had an interesting experience with perfume; I put on a dress that once belonged to Natacha Rambova, a costume designer in the 1920's who was married to Rudolph Valentino. I could still smell her perfume on the dress.I have no memory of the dress, except for it being very delicate, and may have forgotten about it completely if it hadn't been for the perfume. I was smelling the very essence that Rudoph Valentino did. Amazing! Happy Birthday wishes to your daughter!
ReplyDeleteCatherine
I have never heard of Frederic Malle. I would have to say that the Iris Poudre would be my fav. Although all of the descriptions sound lovely.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to you princess! Don't worry, you don't have to grow up too. You did your job now can be the kid again =]
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you posted this. I'm longing for a new fragrance and will definitely look into these!
What a lovely post. I love sensory memories triggered by perfume. Chanel #5 does it for me and to me. My mother wore it when I was a little girl. I live far from her so now I wear it to keep her close.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful dedication to your gorgeous girl Vicki! Son #4 is celebrating his 27th birthday today, so my mind's been scrolling through the images & memories of the day of his birth all morning - as Mothers do.
ReplyDeleteYes, you are so right. The scent of a favourite perfume is such an evocative part of our lives. I've had a signature perfume for the past 20 years & have sometimes wondered if I should update it to something new. However, I recently had a meeting with a gorgeous client, a Neuroradiologist who I hadn't seen for about 5 years. He gave me a big hug first up & then bowled me over with "Oh, you still smell the same!". It brought tears to my eyes. So I guess, I'll keep with the tried & true.
Millie ^_^
Vicki, what a beautiful wistful article. What I like about you is that you NOTICE the moments that are small and special and share them with us. Write on, Marigail
ReplyDeleteFor me its the house of Guerlain. Jicky is one of my favourites along with Mitsouko.
ReplyDeletePerfume is memory as they say.
You know you got me thinking about the different perfumes I've used at differnt times in my life.
ReplyDeleteI was trying to remember what I was wearing when I was 21. I think hippie dippie Patchouloi oil ha ha. I don't think I started wearing perfume until I started wearing make-up, and I was 27!
It was Opium, and Guerlain Naheema then. I had a Chole and Joy thing for awhile, Fracas, Paris - the florals.
Then a Vetiver departure. Maybe it was a boyfriend's cologne I borrowed ha ha.
And always a little dejavu with Patchouli now and then.
About 12 years ago I found Todd by Todd Oldham, and have stayed with it. It has a chocolate bottom note.
Here in New Orleans we have an old perfume shop named Hove - they mix their own scents, and have one that is very much like Joy. I also use their Tea Olive which is like the Sweet Olive flowers here. And sometimes their Patchouli ha ha.
It's amazing how a perfume can define the days of your life.

Hi Vicki, your post reminds me of so much, I loved it..firsly the book Perfume by Patrick Suskind, how I love that story..secondly my second daughter Leiny whose blog is Just A Minute on my blog roll is turning 21 next month and in third year studying Fine Art Practice, just one year left and she graduates, I have been feeling the same sentiments you expressed. (Thank you for the gift idea.) Finally, I read an article in next months Country Living about Perfume workshops in Grasse, it sounded amazing. hugs Margie.
ReplyDeleteThat is such a lovely post. My daughter is still a toddler but I plan to follow your tradition as she grows. I feel a poignant sadness at the thought of her ever leaving. Yes, the time does fly by too swiftly.
ReplyDeleteThe perfumes you have mentioned sound divine. My favourite perfumes have always been Coco and Shalimar. Scent really does take you back - I always have a bottle of Youth Dew as it reminds me of my grandmother and also when I was a teenager I loved the spicy Cinnibar by Estee Lauder. I still have it at home and every time I smell it I return to those years.
How right you are about the power of perfume. I never regard it as an extravagance and, whilst I can manage not to buy, say, new pairs of shoes, I cannot be without several bottles of the smelly stuff.
ReplyDeleteWillow,
ReplyDeleteMy actual favourite from Frederic Malle is called Le Parfum de Therese which was created in the early 50's by Edouard Roudnitska for his wife and she was the only person to wear this scent. xv
I love your 'pet' names for your daughters...princess and angel.
ReplyDeleteMy father once told me that every person has a dominant sense, and he said that mine must be my sense of smell! A smell can take me back to a cherished memory, or even just a simple memory of a place in my past.
When I was a child, my mother would wear perfume when she was going to a party. I remember thinking she was so glamorous and elegant, and the smell of that perfume would always take me back to my childhood. I don't think it is made any more - it was by Madame Rochas.
My personal favorite: Eau de blanc by Bulgari. I love it - it is very light and fresh.
My scent has long been Escape from Calvin Klein.....but my memory goes back to my early days of finding the 'right' perfume. Jardin de Bagatelle by Guerlain. A crisp light sweet scent...my husband (then boyfriend) could never resist nuzzling my neck when I wore it. It is very hard to find any more....
ReplyDeleteI was so thrilled to see one of my favorite perfume lines on your beautiful blog today. I have five or six bottles of Frederic Malle perfumes and adore every one of them. I am a serious collector of niche and boutique fragrances. The one you gave your princess for her birthday is also one of my favorites. Here in the states, Barneys carries many of Mr. Malle's creations and I have had the pleasure of meeting him on one of his many trips to our Dallas stores. I should not get started on this subject, but another line you might like is Serge Lutens. But you can never go wrong with a Frederic Malle fragrance. Thank you for spreading the love of wonderful French fragrances -- just one of my many obsessions of all things French!
ReplyDeleteChanteusevca - I am also a great lover of Serge Lutens Fleur d' Oranger, that is my all time favourite of his. xv
ReplyDeleteI love the Malle line. It's so interesting to see what perfumers make when they are given freedom.
ReplyDeleteI agree the Parfum De Therese appeals because of the romantic story.
On me my favourite Malle's are Dans Tes Bras and L' Eau D'Hiver.
Your daughter has great taste- like her Mum!
Oh Vicki! We have a lot of beautiful fragrance loves in common! I love that one too! I started with Un Lys and Chergui from the Serge Lutens line, and have many more bell jars now. Aren't they unique? Now how about L'Artisan and Annick Goutal, Guerlain, Caron, etc., etc., etc. France has the best, of course! The Ormond Jayne line from the UK is quite interesting and lovely too. I told you! I should not get started on this subject. I adore your blog was thrilled to have found it this year after our friends moved to Paris a few years ago. I am living vicariously through you and our friends in Paris.
ReplyDeleteWell Happy 21st Birthday to your daughter! How exciting!
ReplyDeleteYes, perfume does bring me back, help me to recall memories along with souvenirs from the past. I love all of these perfums you listed and will definitely check them out! I am always up for a new scent, it makes me feel feminine pretty and fresh!
Chanteusevca - Un Lys is a summer favourite and Annick Goutal's Gardenia Passion my all time love. Ormond Jayne makes some of the best English scented candles - I am burning the cardamon and juniper berry one, right now. xv
ReplyDeletehow discriptive you are !
ReplyDeletei still wore what i wore when i was 21 sometimes ( miss dior ). actually, that was my first scent that i rec'd from mom at 15 yrs.
it still is so clean .
remember the square violet candies ?
i love the scent of violets.
try 'insolence' ( guerlain )
it is yummo !
I am going to Barney's NY in Beverly Hills on Thursday and see if I can find my own Malle. I have always wanted to try his fragrances. I'll let you know if I leave with anything.
ReplyDeleteYour post has inspired me to add perfume to my list for my daughter's 16th birthday this year. Its a long way yet (September) but I have already started planning her '16 girls pampering party' and am determine to give her the best birthday ever!
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that perfume is a signature for some reason and really wanted to have the best perfume that only suit to me. :)
