paris... portrait of a city...


There is a new book on the block from Taschen for all of us who love Paris... Portrait of a City. 

This book brings together the past and the present, the monumental and the everyday, objects and people. Images captured by the most illustrious photographers – Daguerre, Marville, Atget, Lartigue, Brassaï, Kertész, Ronis, Doisneau, Cartier-Bresson and many more – but also by many unknown photographers, attempt to bottle just a little of that “Parisian air”, something of that particular poetry given out by the stones and inhabitants of a constantly changing city that has inspired untold numbers of writers and artists over the ages.


I am a big fan of any publication by Taschen so I have ordered my copy here... US and Canadian readers can pre-order here...

If you can't wait for Portrait of a City and are in need of a Paris fix... This is one of my other very favourites... Taschen's Paris... I never take a trip to Paris without a quick flick through their recommendations...

    Vicki, I just saw this book at the Musee Fabre's wonderful boutique in Montpellier (ps. if you haven't already seen their show on Abstract painting, it is most certainly worth the trip) and just to prepare you--yes, it is gorgeous but it is huuuuge! It is a coffee table in itself. :)

    I love their Paris and New York books too--they make me dream when I am homesick for either one or the other!

    Thank you, this sounds wonderful for any francophile like myself. Know someone going there to spend 3 months for research later this month, and he is a novice photographer..this would make a great bon voyage gift. Thank you Vicki!

    Taschen always has me dreaming - I have a coffee table full of their publications. On occasions, the anticipation they create is better than the reality!
