favourite french stories...

I don't know about you but I am still feeling in the holiday mood... aka... I am feeling a little lazy... I can't quite get myself back into the work mode and do those things that should and need to be done. Perhaps it is because life is still in 'slow mo' in my part of the world or perhaps it is because I haven't taken down my Christmas decorations as yet... I always feel that the house looks so sad when they disappear... who knows... but truthfully, I am loving this relaxed pace... because it can't last...

What have I been doing? Reading... and re-reading all my favourite French memoir style books...  If you are in the mood, like me, for some Francophilia... I suggest...

(European readers can find them here, here, here and here)

These are just some of my favourites... I love their easy pace... they require nothing more than a smile and a sigh from time to time... No mental calisthenics or mind bending philosophies... just easy light reading on a subject I hold dear... France...

Perfect for the weekend... so perfect to maintain that holiday mood...xv

  1. Oooh, this is exactly what I need! Just some light happy reading. Why I always save the "hard" books for winter is beyond me. :) I took my decorations and tree down yesterday (yes, a day early) and it is nice to have the space back even though it was lovely while it lasted.

    Bon WE!

  2. Thanks for the suggestions and these are the kind of books I read to relax. In fact I've read two of the four and the last one is on my list.

  3. As I'm down with a cold and flu, reading something like this might be just what the doctor ordered. I'm off to the library to see if they have any of these. Thanks for the tips.

  4. I bought Lunch in Paris and The Olive farm over the holidays and have not read them yet but so looking forward to it. There is a new book out by Kristine Espinasse called Blossoming in Provence and just ordered today. So many books so little time... Have a great weekend.

  6. I am SO with you!! Having serious re-entry issues! With two of the big children still home, it continues to feel somehow like vacation!! I am not familiar with any of these books - will be sure to check them out!!

  7. Great recommendations for fun light reading. I've read Almost French and really enjoyed the book. I'll make a note of the others and add to my book list.

  8. Vicki,
This time of year prompts the same interests in me...a cozy fire, a cup of tea and revisiting a favorite book is my idea of heaven. Thanks for the tips on titles...I'm ready for an easy, fun read.

  9. Will miss the Christmas decor in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea when it's removed this weekend. But then...hordes of male golfers will descend Feb 3 and decorate our town in their pastel cashmere pulls for the big Pebble Beach golf do. ;)

  11. I'm with you! I think the dark, cold mornings make it difficult to get going. I have Lunch in Paris and can't wait to start it. I need to finish my Book Club book (Before I Go To Sleep) - not my favorite..

  12. Yes, I too find the house changes mood when the tree is gone...the fragrance, lights, decorations from years of collecting.

I am hoping to spend more time in France in 2012..so timely your suggestion "French-Love and a New Life In Paris"...must go find that one.

  14. Thanks for the reading tips. I've read two of them (Lunch in Paris and Almost French) but the other two are going on my list!

You're right - it has been hard to get back into the swing of things. And today is officially still the 12th Day of Christmas...

  15. Perfect season for light reading. Right now, i'm in the middle of 'The House in Paris' by Elizabeth Bowen. An Irish author, but French location, and making me long even more for a visit there.. And just began reading 'A Novel Bookstore' by Laurence Cosse'. A wonderful story so far...

  18. Hi Vicki, I now feel vindicated! I sit here amongst a table full of decorations that I can't quite get the energy up to pack away. I am doing it in small bursts. We have a few sickies in our house this weekend with flus and I feel quite tired- hence a visit to blogland.xxCorrina

  19. Having just read Lunch in Paris and Almost French only a couple of months ago I felt inordinately excited by this post! I must now attend to the other two recommendations. I have been on a French themed reading splurge for the last six months as my husband and I are spending six weeks in France later this year (my first time!) We've had so much fun reading about France (don't ask how many French blogs I have subscribed to besides yours!)- all in the name of research! Love your blog - and keep that holiday feeling!

  21. Happy New Year Vicki.
Yes, I have read and enjoyed all your lovely suggestions. Really I must admit, if it's about french life, I HAVE read it. I can't get enough. Have just reread Cooking and Travelling in South West France, The French Market and On Rue Tatin. All come with lovely stories of French farmers markets which I adore and delicious recipes. Armchair travel at its best.
