what is it about paris?...

As I wandered the streets of Paris last weekend... I kept asking myself why we all love Paris like we do. I think I speak for most people when I say that Paris holds a certain charm, an allure beyond most other cities. We romanticise Paris... even Woody Allen has had a turn at that... and we can't get enough of her Gallic charms. I have lost count of my visits to Paris... spoilt I know, but lucky with my geography... and yet I am never bored, I am forever excited and I cannot wait to touch down on those any-thing-but-clean pavements... This question fascinates me... the why-we-are-so-infatuated-with-Paris phenomenon... Paris is a major city, like all major cities and it has it's fair share of infrastructure problems. The weather can be grey and rainy... like London... for much of the time and the locals have a less than exemplary reputation (not that I agree with that...) Hours of opening are not the most user friendly and strikes are a hazard for the unsuspecting traveller.... Yet I don't think any of this deters us... not me... Paris on the grey and in the rain is just as beautiful... A closed shop, although disappointing, is a sneak peak of pleasure and the city shenanigans... well we just deal with them...

What is the answer? Why are we enamoured with this city like no other? I decided it was not for one reason alone but for many and that was the difference... Most major cities can be summed up with a couple of descriptive adjectives but not Paris... Paris is a poem of adjectives and a list of superlatives...

* Physical beauty... She is without doubt an architectural masterpiece and her visuals are blinding, mesmerising even...
* Uniformity... Nothing jars the eyes... and when the architecture changes... it's internal or hidden away for example the business district, La Defence... Architectural style blends in Paris...
* Grandeur... Paris is grand in the truest sense...She makes other cities seem naive in comparison even though she is smaller than many others. The boulevards, the parks, the buildings and the monuments are seriously grown up. There is nothing dinky or cute about central Paris...
* Aristocratic... Paris is elegant, sophisticated and poised... Sometimes Paris makes me feel like a clumsy child... all arms and legs... her refinement highlights unsophistication... Perhaps this is why some are intimidated by Paris and her locals. It's not intentional.. it's geographical, historical and genetic...
* Style... Paris has such a distinctive style... Her decor internally and externally is identifiable. An image of Paris needs no label... we always know it's her... Nothing says Paris more like her ability to merge the old with the new and the eclectic with the classic. Think museums, restaurants, hotels, apartments, stores and even gardens... there is always an element of what I call "French surprise"... something unpredictable that spells P-A-R-I-S...
*Culture... Paris is an artist's dream, a photographers fantasy, a writer's inspiration but she is also very much a cultural haven for the people. Paris offers as much or as little enlightenment as your heart desires...

And once I moved away from the big Parisian picture for a closer look I thought about...

* The Locals... They are who we find fascinating and why we are attracted to Paris. The Parisians are urban creatures who make no secret of their way of life. As travellers it is unusual to witness daily life first hand... but in Paris it's possible. They are on the street buying bread, having their first coffee, walking their dogs, shopping for food, eating their lunch, gossiping with friends, exercising in the park. The Paris apartment is generally small and most people live in close confines, so life is much more about the external.
* The Cafes... They are Paris and in any arrondissement there are many. Most cities have cafes, that's true, but these cafes are different. Parisian cafes are as much about taking time to observe life as they are about coffee and croissants. They have a vibe and a buzz despite what is oftentimes poor quality coffee and average food... but we still want to be a part of that scene, to soak it up... to sit facing the street, alongside each other, rather than face to face as we normally do... We all want to people watch and that's what Paris lets us do... legitimately not furtively... People watching is a French sport and a national pastime...
* The Food... We love the food and the food is good... most of the time. For the sweet tooth... the chocolates, candies and patisseries are sublime... fruit paté, marzipan, glacé chestnuts... I could go on and on... Hands up how many of us salivate over macarons and have queued at Ladurée or Pierre Hermé for that special box?  And what of the sauces... when it comes to savoury? The hours that go into making the right jus is the difference between French cuisine and others... The more I think about it, the more I believe we take that trip to Paris for the tastes...
* The Wine... nothing tastes quite like French champagne in Paris... We have all become very blasé about drinking bubbles but they tickle even more when consumed in their homeland...

*The Flowers... Last weekend I found myself photographing flowers and flower shops... These small floral boutiques are on every corner and the blooms were exquisite, so much prettier than those that I see in other cities... Paris is lavish when it comes to flowers... and her arrangements are uplifting...

*The Speciality Stores... Paris is about the small boutique, the unique product. There are many well known chain stores and designer boutiques but they are not what I associate Paris with... Paris is a city where the old fashioned shopping experience still exists... Go to Astier de Villatte next time you visit... you will see what I mean...
*The Dogs... yes, I think we go to Paris to see the pups. The Parisians and their canine companions are renowned... and deservedly. They are adorable...even if they aren't as street disciplined as they should be!

And I can't not mention the fashion... the women and the girls...

*Paris is fashion... yes, she is couture and prêt à porter but what interests me more is the street style. That is where the girls get it right and where I try and observe. This past weekend the temperatures had dropped and the majority of girls had dressed for the cold. It was as if they had sent a city wide text alert with what to wear on a Saturday morning... jeans, tight puffer jacket with fur and short biker style boots... and a chunky scarf wound effortlessly around the neck... They looked chic and I immediately wanted to toss my tailored coat, dump my tired lace-ups and head home for my puffer and boots. It's not what they wear it's how they wear it... and that's the edge... Paris women interpret fashion and give it their own nod... Puffers don't have to be plain and bulky or worn as we shush down the slopes... Biker boots don't have to be Harley Davidson like and scream fashion victim... simple works too... it's about the form and the combination... And as for the elderly women... I think they are my very favourites. Older women in Paris are not afraid of fashion and that is the difference... They stay in the decade, they are not frumpy... their hair, their eyeglasses, their accessories are the latest but their basics are classic... Fearless... and confident that's them.

Our love affair with Paris is not simple... It is complex, deep and long lasting. She intrigues and beguiles us in so many ways... I am sure that you have other reasons for loving this city as I do... What have I missed?... Can you enlighten me about this most magical of cities? xv

P.S I forgot something... The language... How could I... such a beautiful and lyrical sound....

  1. I visited Paris for the first time in 1978 and I fell in love :) Some of my friends are still living there.

  2. Oh, there is something special with Paris, something that is hard to put your finger on! It truly is one magical city. I feel like jumping onto the first plane to Paris right now!

    Thanks for a lovely blog!

  3. Absolutely one of the best descriptions of Paris that I have read. Ever!

I was there a couple of weeks ago with Kim and altho I have been going to Paris for many years now, it was absolutely one of my favourite trips there. I thought long and hard about why this was and actually, wasn't really certain. Possibly because we just focused on taking in the atmosphere, we stopped for coffee/to eat when we wanted, we didn't really do "touristy" stuff....we acted like Parisiennes. Although of course we could never be Parisiennes!

I LOVE cities, love the feel and energy of them and really love exploring them. Paris was grey and foggy when I was there recently but I have to say that it is still probably the most beautiful city in the world, the architecture is incredible, you can't help but be awestruck, however often you visit.

And yes, the cafes, flowers shops....those Parisians.....all so unique. I agree about the older women, my favourites too....I particularly noticed them this trip....it is HOW they wear it, you are so right. I could watch them all day.

It is an intriguing city, with an undefinable quality. You feel you can capture the essence and soul of some cities but I honestly think with Paris it's impossible.

Great post Vicki....now I shall be thinking about Paris all day!! X

  8. Perhaps the fact that only in Paris would you see a dog on a motorcycle actually earing goggles. What a great pic Vicki! My favorite. Paris has many charms as you have listed so well, but the way they treat their doggies is the most charming of all. Much love XO

  10. Vicki,
I've only been to Paris once in 1990 and still the memory lingers. Your descriptions were perfect. When I came away from Paris and asked myself the question you pose, what is it about Paris? I realized that for me it was all of the things you mentioned as well as feeling like I was in the presence of a beautiful person, someone that was kind and interesting and fun, but not aware of it...just born that way and not ruined by ego. For now I enjoy Paris with tour guides such as yourself, thank goodness for the internet and blog friends.
Great post, when the first image is a darling pup dressed for the day, I'm hooked.

  11. The street markets, the way food is displayed in shop windows, the haute couture of the people on the street, the lyricalness of the french language, the arrogant confidence of the french men, the brioche, the macarons. I think I can go on and on and on. I am smitten with Paris. Always.

  12. I am a new follower and so enjoying your posts - I spent an evening poring back over your blog - it's amazing. I am a botanical artist from Perth in Western Australia and taking my first trip to Paris in April for our 25th wedding anniversary. Reading your wonderful take on Paris is the perfect preparation for such a trip!

I love your photo of the dog as when we were there last week I took photos of sweet french pooches and after returning home, realized I need to dedicate more time to shooting them on my next visit!
I agree - there is something enchanting about Paris - this was my favorite trip yet!

  14. What an amazing post!!! I've only been once during a trip to about 6 other European countries. I can say without a doubt that the best meal we ate during out trip was in Paris.

I would love to go again.

  15. What a fantastic way to describe our fascination with Paris -- it is indeed a poem of adjectives and list of superlatives. And your list covers so many of the things that have head over heels with this city. And your photos make me feel like I was walking down the sidewalks in this magical place! The first one is simply adorable!

  19. Thank you Vicky for a brilliant post!
You've summarized it in such a delicate and talented way all those sighs, glimpses, thoughts, aspirations and feelings we all have to Paris.
Haven't you just outlined a content of your new book? It would be wonderful.
You might just got this mysterious QUOI in Je Ne Sais Quoi. Try this book by Olivier Magny, it'll make you laugh and smile all the way. Such an homage and joke all in one. And celestial Parisians become not so distant human beings, after all they made this city so dear to our hearts.

  20. Paris wakes up the woman in the girl...it is where you meet who you are.

  21. In addition to just being 'merveilleuse', Paris has that 'je ne sais pas'.
That certain quality of sophistication and beauty that few other cities possess. It can be seen in the way its citizens carry themselves and is mirrored in the artistically arranged store windows.

I enjoy following your blog. I have started one of my own, http://ladolcevilla.wordpress.com. Hope you'll take a look (I am at the very beginning stages......) Best, Lisa lisadenunzio@bellsouth.net

  22. You're right, Paris is ethereal, aloof but oh so much more alluring because of that...

  23. Yes, and yes, and YES to all of it!!
You have summed up Paris brilliantly..
The language, oh dear, I think I was born to speak French!! Where were immersion schools when I was a child??
But for me, Paris is a living, breathing DREAM. When I saw it for the first time, it went so beyond all of my expectations. The attention to detail, the attention to BEAUTY, balance, the art of every pursuit.
Have I had some unpleasant moments in this Grande Dame of cities? Bien sur! But this has never detracted from its magic. Thank you so much for this beautiful homage..
And un GRAND merci pour votre visite chez mon blog!
    Bonne Journee...
    xoxo,

  24. In New York everything seems possible, but not so in Paris. If anything it perpetually seems just out of reach until the moment that a happy accident strikes and then just pure beauty slides into place!

Vicki, this was such an amazing post. I also have to agree that I don't think that I have ever read such a perfect description AND that there could be a new book in here... :)

I did think of one thing to add: the gardens. Crossing le Jardin des Tuileries at twighlight is perfection.

  25. PS. I can't believe that I forgot to say bravo for your first photo! If that doesn't make someone smile, it is time to haul them off to the loony bin.

  27. Oh Vicki , what a wonderful post. My heart has been aching to return to Paris , its been ten years. Ive asked myself those same questions. Why was I in love with her at 14 when we started French lessons at school ? My first visit to Paris, why would I burst into tears & any given moment ? Have I lived here before in a previous life ? It was like I was home yet detached as at times I felt I stood out , I tried not to dress like a tourist but still didnt dress like the effortlessly chic women. Her beauty overwhelmed me , yet I am surrounded by family & friends (some have been there & some who havent) who dont see or feel what I do. To one day visit Paris with a like minded friend is a dream I have for a long time. My nine year old daughter is headed that way , Im not sure if it is her love of all things French or my influence on her. I picture the two of us walking around this beautiful city together. She loves art & sees beauty around her beyond her years.
I think you should turn this post into a short novel , I want to read it over.

  29. whow, did I enjoy this description of Paris.. so true ! such a nice compte rendu to help me rendre compte pourquoi
what I would not have thought of at first glance is 'uniformity' and yet that is so obvious... Brussels is the contrary (haha !) but maybe that is the main reason why I love Paris so much ... and...Brussels !

  30. GORGEOUS!! So agree. I think the it's in the genesis.

The 1st motto of Ancient Greece was 'Know Thyself' and it was an intellectual powerhouse. Pico's 'Oration on the Dignity of Man' sparked the Renaissance--a generation of men like 'the angels on high.' America was founded in principle's of Rousseau's 'Social Contract' and until we went nuts... And Paris--her genesis Isis...Goddess of Magic, putting things together, and ultimate feminine power. Paris is the foremost woman in the universe. A magnetic forcefield of hypnotic delights!

They should be adding an addendum to their inward bound Customs declaration forms 'Ete-voussoirs de near en France comme un resultant direct de la lecture French Essence?'. I bet if they counted up all the ticks in that box it would amount to thousands!

  52. Thanks so much for such a thoughtful, articulate, and loving description of the city I adore. I bought a one-way ticket to Paris when I was 19 and spent four fabulous years there, working and studying and having the time of my life! That was in the late '60s. Now that I'm "une dame d'un certain age," I know that women are appreciated at every age in Paris. I never feel "invisible" there as I sometimes do in New York. Paris may not always be easy, but she's always worth the effort.
