Dear Vicki,
ReplyDeleteOddly enough, I just read your comment about David Lebowitz....and there are twelve copies of his "The Sweet Life in Paris" sitting right in front of me, on the top shelf of this desk.
For various reasons, "the Sweet Life in Paris" and Deborah Cavendish's (aka the Duchess of Devonshire) memoir "Wait for Me" are my go-to presents this christmas season. Between Cavendish and Lebowitz (and THERE'S a pairing you'll never see in the same room), I've settled presents for 25 friends.
speaking of good/invigorating writing? I clicked on your link to coulson's site and glimpsed a photograph of a newspaper, which featured a picture of Charlottes Rampling. Only an hour or so ago, I came across the most wonderful sentence (in the recently published memoir, "Lucking Out: my life getting down and semi-dirty in seventies new york", by James Wolcott, the Vanity Fair columnist).
Regarding Liliana Calvasni's "The Night Porter", Wolcott describes the movie as one in which "sadomasochistic decadence was represented by the ravishing desolation of Charlotte Rampling's Euro-goddess bone structure".
That's the most dead-on, accurate, and articulate description of Rampling I've ever encountered.....and very funny, also.
Level best as Ever,
David Terry

ReplyDeleteOh my, you have to love David Terry, non? :) (I read an excerpt from the mentioned Wolcott book in this months VF and agree that the writing is excellent)
ReplyDeleteVicki, I just wanted to send a little thank you. I was out strolling with the pupper and the Christmas lights in Arles came on. That somehow made me think to your posts about exactly that in St. Remy which made me realize that I must have been following your blog for a year already. And so thank you for a year of pure inspiration. Your writings and images have also inspired me to try and be more specific, more evocative and more personal on my own blog. I love seeing the beauty and deep appreciation for this amazing region through your eyes as well. It helps to keep mine wide open.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend!
Heather
Those shutters are beautiful...have a great weekend and I'll check out those tips!

Dear Vicki, thank you for stopping by my blog and for your comment
ReplyDeleteYour image is stunning...xo
ah yes, the blue is lovely but I think you can't beat that Breton-blue that matches the sky on a sunny day.
ReplyDeleteI'm biased, I admit it
Talking of Paris takes me back to a semester abroad...Those were the lovely youthful days. Absolutely love that house, shutters and all. This weekend, I'm reading my well worn copy of The Alice B. Toklas Cook book, and wishing I had a time travel machine.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the suggestions, I just bought a gorgeous book The French Cat by Rachael McKenna, think it will be a present for Mum...
ReplyDeleteColor, texture, balance, and very French, love your image.
