Yesterday I took a friend to visit Tissus Gregoire - a fabric shop or should I say warehouse - on the outskirts of Avignon. This shop is not known for the beautiful display or compelling website; it is a shop for those fabric lovers who know exactly what they want and how any metres. The fabrics are many and messy - the toiles are muddled in with the silks and the linens rub up with the velours. It is the kind of place where you take a deep breath before you enter, dig deep to find your patience and be prepared to spend time and look hard. Having said all that it is also the place for a good buy. The fabrics are good quality and of reasonable price - the choice is enormous.
I have always loved toile, such a romantic cloth and so very French - the prints depict such sweet tales of love and adventure.
These are just some of many toiles available other than the classic single colour ways. I couldn't seem to choose yesterday, sometimes too much choice is worse than not enough and the variety becomes overwhelming. I have decided I will go back and buy enough fabric to make some square tablecloths and napkins for outside; I imagine using them picnic style on the lawn - one pattern for the cloth and the other complimentary toile for the napkins.
If you ever visit Avignon and feel like filling your suitcase with fabric then take a little detour away from the walled city - it's not the most scenic of routes or the most interesting of destinations but for the home lover it is a paradise, xv.
I have always loved toile, too. I do enjoy all the different colors, but black and white may be my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI have noticed in Oz through my suppliers a real return in toile's, doesn't it go to show how timeless they are! At the moment I'm covering some lampshades for a client in the most stunning hand printed hot pink toile on a crisp white background, they are going to look amazing. With the left over fabric I made cushions with a small frill creating an edgy fun look to the fabric. x
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like paradise. L love toile as well. I also enjoy places where you have to hunt for the treasure! xx
ReplyDeleteThey seriously were just beautiful, thank you for sharing them.
ReplyDeletexxx
I love those 'out of the way' places too. Always worth the visit and I feel like I can lose myself there for a while! It sounds like heaven to me....
ReplyDeleteI am currently searching for just the right fabric for the new window seat in my bedroom. How I wish I could rummage through this fabric warehouse in Avignon. It would be heaven! Lee :)
ReplyDelete...it seems like paradise to me!!!
ReplyDeletehugs, and have a great day

Fabulous, just what I am looking for as I want some christmas stockings made out of toile de jouy so I am looking for fabric at present.
ReplyDeleteLeeann x
I love toile de jouy! My best friend has just given me a gorgeous toile de jouy's tablecloth and I love it!
ReplyDeleteVisit this website

I adore toile as well; I used to sell wallpaper and matching fabrics and toile was very popular back then (in the 80s?). I've never tired of it; those patterns you've shown are really lovely and the tablecloth & napkin idea appeals to me.
ReplyDeleteI have a Queen Anne stool in my ensuite and every year or so I change the cushion cover. I have a length of toile in the linen press, blue and white, but it would look pretty for a time...
Happy weekend!
I can remember being a very young girl and seeing my first toile fabric in the gracious home of my grandmother...it was in a lovely shade of blue and I was so attracted to it...I have had a love affair with toile ever since...Thank you for sharing the information on this shop...Have a wonderful day...
ReplyDeleteLaura
Ahhhhh, the classic French toile. I'll have to remember this source, for the next time I'm in France :)
ReplyDeleteAhhh! My kind of place. Finding hidden jewels.
ReplyDeleteToile would have to be one of my favourites. My Grandmother used to have a dinner set by Johnson's called Toile de Juoy, and I remember falling it in love with it as a boy. My dining room chairs are black, with a black and white Toile upholstery.
ReplyDeleteCharming prints! My mother was a great fan of toile and used it lavishly. I love it in other people's houses but for my own, I like it in moderation and use it for throw pillows sometimes. Table cloths and napkins sound perfect.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me or does Avignon seem to have the most incredible shops? I am still obsessed with one of those lampshades. I am trying to justify some mini breaking- via Paris.
ReplyDeleteoh how beautiful, and what a fun day....i'm certain my bags would be bulging!!
ReplyDeletei just looked at the photos again, and that one of the rows of toile is such a great shot!!
ReplyDeleteOh,how pretty!! Love toile of any sort, love the story it tells...hope you are well and having a great summer!! All the best,Chrissy
ReplyDeleteI am planning on a fall project of making a quilt for my daughters room and that middle one would be just perfect; color but still enough pink tones....I love toile!
ReplyDeleteOh land of temptation! Fabric houses are the best, aren't they? I do love your idea about the two different toiles for tablecloth and napkin. You must show us when it's finished!!
ReplyDeleteHi Vicki--I love toile (especially the antique) and I love rummaging through stuff--that shop must have been made for me! Thanks,
ReplyDeleteI've just received your book! I've flipped through and it's fantatsic!!! I'm saving it for next week end at the beach!
ReplyDeletesorry I forgot...I'd love to have a place like this in my city, I'll spend hours and hours looking at all the toiles!
ReplyDeleteoh I can never go past a toile, stunning x
ReplyDeleteOh, I would love to go to this fabric store. Fabric and sewing is in my life mostly every day. Toile is a favorite of mine and I never tire of it. I made a roman blind from a similar green and pink toile. I'll have to do a toile post soon.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful day :)
Darlene
France. Fabric warehouse. Toile. Yes, that is paradise!
ReplyDeleteI love fabrics...beautiful ones even though I am totally clueless as to what one can do with them. I just like looking at them. Have a great Thursday!
ReplyDeletexo
oh boy I would have been like a kid in a candy story. I love fabrics and especially toile. I am actually looking for a yummy cream and brown toile and am having a hard time finding the right one. I bet that store would have it. Woas to a french girl stuck in Southern Illinois!
ReplyDeleteYou create the most luscious 'word art' about France, where you live, how you shop, the way you enjoy living. It's pure bliss. The weekend approaches ..... enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI love toile!! I would feel like I'd died and gone to heaven in that fabric shop!! Lovely!
ReplyDeleteI love toile too and hunting for buried treasures in a warehouse or fleamarket. Your tablecloths and napkins will be lovely, I'm sure. Thanks for sharing. P.S. I also enjoyed your article about "home".
ReplyDeleteCyn
Ahhh.. They are just beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love your idea of a toile picnic blanket-- so romantic. I've paired black and white toile with a masculine check and rustic sand colored walls for my spare bedroom, but I am enamored with the colored fabrics you showcased here.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous. I just love toile. I just came over from Paris Apartment's blog and your vanity truly took my breathe away. So, soft, classy, and fabulous.
ReplyDeleteThis is one temptation I am going to follow...thank you!
ReplyDeletelove it. I've heard about it many tiemes but never been there . After your post, I will run to Avignon to see it
ReplyDeleteOh I would go crazy there! How I wish they had an on-line shop...but the big part of finding treasure spots like this one is being there...sigh...next time I am in your area. I can just see your garden decked out with your toile linens, it will be exquisite!
ReplyDeleteNathalie
Ah silly me...i did see via your post the link to the shop, but they do not show any of their precious toiles...
ReplyDeleteNathalie
I just joined your website. Lovely as are the toiles. I have several toile swatches myself, mostly in robin's egg blue shades, some I have never used, but adore.
ReplyDeleteI wish I were in Avignon!

How wonderful! That sounds like my favorite type of store. Not showy or flashy, just wonderful merchandise and a real respect for the industry and for their own business. And those toiles really are just very special.
ReplyDeleteplease, please, please take me shopping with you...
ReplyDeleteLove reading your blog, bringing my lovely Europe back to me. Thank you.

A real paradise it sounds like!
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday.
Seeing all that lovely fabric makes my heart flutter. How I wish I was with you to plow through the piles and find some treasures. Toile de jouey fabric is my favourite and I came home from Paris with a whole suitcase of it! I've only made one pillow so far and a tablecloth is next.
ReplyDeleteToile is my most favorite print there is. I especially love the black and white. What a lovely posting!

Have a nice summer. Any plans?
I am such a sucker for toile, Vicki, and these are some of the loveliest patterns I have seen. What a treat to visit this place. have a beautiful weekend!
ReplyDeleteOh, I sure love toile! Years ago I found a bolt of dusty grey and bubblegum pink toile at an estate sale. I fell in love with it and bought it for my future daughter, although at the time I wasn't even married. But that's how the women of my family are: always planning for the future.
ReplyDeleteMy darling angel came along and she's got the prettiest upholstered headboard and window curtains.
Wish you and your family a wonderful weekend!
FAB toile! LOVE shopping for fabrics!!! Bon week-end! Fifi
ReplyDeletesuch a classic pattern with so much color...very sweet.

I too, have always loved toile. It is a classic. How wonderful to go to this fabric shop! We love the walled city of Avignon- such wonderful memories. We stayed at Hotel d' Europe and loved every moment. Dan was just saying last night that we need to go back to France! I couldn't agree more!
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend to you!
j.
thank you for your supportive note!
How can you ever choose? I would be in heaven. Happy weekend to you, Vicki.
ReplyDeleteCatherine
Hi Vicki, oh what a find, I love the 'sort through it yourself' shop, the chance to dig around in bales of fabric, wool, whatever you fancy, reminds me of a lucky dip or lucky bag when I was a child, you never knew what you would find. Thank you for posting these great photos. The toile rolls are stunning. Hugs, Margie.
ReplyDeleteCertainly my kind of place. I am always willing & able to roll-up my sleeves for a quality find @ a good price. It must be the challenge of it all?! I so love toile, so romantic isn't it?
ReplyDeleteHappiest of weekends to you ~ deb
I am still in the north of Portugal visiting monasteries, convents, monasteries, some of the interiors have fantastic toiles, you would love them. Living in the lap of luxury and no connection with internet, in a way it was pure bliss...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful depictions of romance and artful play, Vicki. I would certainly love to have a bit of toile for a chair...or even wall covering. Beautiful atmosphere, ready made! xx <3
ReplyDeleteit sounds like the most divine place!!! lucky you! i hope you chose something wonderful, I'm sure you will - I can't wait to see which it is!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOh sounds like great fun!will pin it in my "to do things" when I visit Mum and dad next hopefully not too long down the track, reading your blog might make me sooo home sick, it might happen quicker!:)
ReplyDeleteToile fabrics will be here forever.
ReplyDeleteI love them.

The toile is beautiful, I had bedroom curtains in my last home with maroon & cream and it was the original screen printed toile so they were divine - I had to tear myself away from not taking them with me when we sold - lots of tassells at the top to make them super lush.. look forward to seeing which one went home with you!...j
ReplyDeleteHi Vicki,
ReplyDeleteI have learned two things today: that toile isn't always a single colour, and I wasn't aware that this shop existed when we visited Avignon in 2006! I really like the colours in the last photo.
I've never heard abbout that place before Ineed now to get there. Stop tempting me vicky!
ReplyDeletea bientôt
christian
i can understand you being overwhelmed by choice! i love the colours of the examples you've shown - that green and that dark pinky red. i can imagine the top one as the tablecloth and the 2nd one as the napkins!
ReplyDeleteI am a fabric addict and when I had a shop next to a fabric and uphostery shop I spent more time there then in my own store. I've been better the last couple of years. I've gotten new addiction since then...lol
ReplyDeleteCarole
Thanks Vicki, I've received all of your messages but I'm try to stay away from my pc, that's why I still did not answer or write you !
ReplyDeleteI'm in Toscany and I'm relaxing with all the people I love!
J'adore toile! I use it in a couple of different rooms at Rose Cottage. It would be so difficult to pick which one that is my favorite. Please let us know what you end up with next time you go!
ReplyDeleteNext time I am in France, I would love to visit this amazing fabric store.
And...thank you for stopping by Rose Cottage and sharing in my travels in southwest France. Journeys are so much more fun when shared with another! I hope you will stop by again for more of the millinery adventures. I so appreciate your kind comments!
Best to you,
Debbykay at Rose Cottage Gardens and Farm
What a sensational tip!! How have I never heard of this place??!! I'm adding it to my little black book!
ReplyDeleteThese are simply gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteOh me! Oh my! Oh mercy! I'll never get to visit here. But it's probably just as well.
ReplyDeleteI'd want to stay. Permanently. Just move in and wallow in such wonders, as all this Toile. :-)
Aunt Amelia
The name is in my adventure book. Isn't it fun to really have to look, explore, for what you want. I shall have to jaunt over to Avignon! Thanks.
