A Toile Temptation...

Yesterday I took a friend to visit Tissus Gregoire - a fabric shop or should I say warehouse - on the outskirts of Avignon. This shop is not known for the beautiful display or compelling website; it is a shop for those fabric lovers who know exactly what they want and how any metres. The fabrics are many and messy - the toiles are muddled in with the silks and the linens rub up with the velours. It is the kind of place where you take a deep breath before you enter, dig deep to find your patience and be prepared to spend time and look hard. Having said all that it is also the place for a good buy. The fabrics are good quality and of reasonable price - the choice is enormous.

I have always loved toile, such a romantic cloth and so very French - the prints depict such sweet tales of love and adventure.

These are just some of many toiles available other than the classic single colour ways. I couldn't seem to choose yesterday, sometimes too much choice is worse than not enough and the variety becomes overwhelming. I have decided I will go back and buy enough fabric to make some square tablecloths and napkins for outside; I imagine using them picnic style on the lawn - one pattern for the cloth and the other complimentary toile for the napkins.

If you ever visit Avignon and feel like filling your suitcase with fabric then take a little detour away from the walled city - it's not the most scenic of routes or the most interesting of destinations but for the home lover it is a paradise, xv.

  1. I have always loved toile, too. I do enjoy all the different colors, but black and white may be my favorite.

  2. I have noticed in Oz through my suppliers a real return in toile's, doesn't it go to show how timeless they are! At the moment I'm covering some lampshades for a client in the most stunning hand printed hot pink toile on a crisp white background, they are going to look amazing. With the left over fabric I made cushions with a small frill creating an edgy fun look to the fabric. x

  10. I adore toile as well; I used to sell wallpaper and matching fabrics and toile was very popular back then (in the 80s?). I've never tired of it; those patterns you've shown are really lovely and the tablecloth & napkin idea appeals to me.

I have a Queen Anne stool in my ensuite and every year or so I change the cushion cover. I have a length of toile in the linen press, blue and white, but it would look pretty for a time...

    Happy weekend!

  14. Toile would have to be one of my favourites. My Grandmother used to have a dinner set by Johnson's called Toile de Juoy, and I remember falling it in love with it as a boy. My dining room chairs are black, with a black and white Toile upholstery.

  15. Charming prints! My mother was a great fan of toile and used it lavishly. I love it in other people's houses but for my own, I like it in moderation and use it for throw pillows sometimes. Table cloths and napkins sound perfect.

  16. Is it just me or does Avignon seem to have the most incredible shops? I am still obsessed with one of those lampshades. I am trying to justify some mini breaking- via Paris.

  59. Oh, I sure love toile! Years ago I found a bolt of dusty grey and bubblegum pink toile at an estate sale. I fell in love with it and bought it for my future daughter, although at the time I wasn't even married. But that's how the women of my family are: always planning for the future.
My darling angel came along and she's got the prettiest upholstered headboard and window curtains.
Wish you and your family a wonderful weekend!

  68. Hi Vicki, oh what a find, I love the 'sort through it yourself' shop, the chance to dig around in bales of fabric, wool, whatever you fancy, reminds me of a lucky dip or lucky bag when I was a child, you never knew what you would find. Thank you for posting these great photos. The toile rolls are stunning. Hugs, Margie.

The toile is beautiful, I had bedroom curtains in my last home with maroon & cream and it was the original screen printed toile so they were divine - I had to tear myself away from not taking them with me when we sold - lots of tassells at the top to make them super lush.. look forward to seeing which one went home with you!...j

  76. Hi Vicki,

I have learned two things today: that toile isn't always a single colour, and I wasn't aware that this shop existed when we visited Avignon in 2006! I really like the colours in the last photo.

Next time I am in France, I would love to visit this amazing fabric store.

And...thank you for stopping by Rose Cottage and sharing in my travels in southwest France. Journeys are so much more fun when shared with another! I hope you will stop by again for more of the millinery adventures. I so appreciate your kind comments!
