and that blogger would be me.
I was invited by one of my very favourite bloggers, La Belette Rouge to talk about 'home' and what it means to me. La Belette has invited a group of writers to participate in her 'Home is Where the Guest Blogger is' series this month. La Belette Rouge writes with an honesty that is refreshing, her humour is as dry as it comes and her cast of characters have become a part of my weekly reading 'fix'.
After I wrote my letter to La Belette Rouge, answering her questions and explaining what 'home' means to me, I realized that I have a very complicated and confusing definition of what 'home' is. I came to the conclusion that, 'home' can be anywhere you want it to be. You and want being the important words in that sentence.
You can read my letter to La Belette Rouge here. xv

firstly i love your explanation of where "home is"..growing up in a mobile (military) family come by restless leg symptom too!

You write so well Vicki. I really enjoyed your "guest blog spot" on La Belette Rouge. Home for me definitely has to be familiar but familiarity is more complex than it seems. Familiarity is a feeling, a feeling that perhaps you have been there before. I love my home in Melbourne however, I have viewed a house that has been on the market three times in 6 years. The moment I walk in, it feels like home, maybe it comes on the market so often because it is watiing for me.
ReplyDeleteI am over from La Belette Rouge. I am so pleased to find you. My husband and I just returned from a vacation in Provence... We spent a day in St. Remy. We would love to move to Provence or at least visit a lot more often. thank you for the inspiration. Having moved around quite a bit with my husband's work, I can relate to your struggle with defining "home."
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! I will go read it now.
ReplyDeleteI love that street sign. Oh, so many paths to take.
ReplyDeleteI'm off to read your guest spot now.

I'm off to read your interview!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Vicki...lovely indeed. And I agree about LBR, she is a talented young lady with a lot of love in her heart.
ReplyDeleteHello Vicki,
ReplyDeleteJust paid a visit to LBR and enjoyed reading about what home means to you.
Dear Vicki~
ReplyDeleteI will go read it now. I can't wait to see what you wrote. I ADORE your words. My husband once told me that his HOME is where ever I was... that was the most beautiful thing anyone has ever said to me. I cherish those words forever. Thank you for another soulful post!
xx's
Janet
Very well said Chez Vicki and thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteFor me home is where my family/children come to see my husband and I. The place that the children come back to live when they need a hand and can feel safe.
ReplyDeleteHome is where the family are

Beautiful story of life, where you do something becouse you feel it.
ReplyDeleteMy home is where my heart is...i have a big heart in many places in the world so...if you ask me...my story is also complicated.

It was a truly lovely read!
ReplyDeletei'm looking forward to reading it, i'm heading over now!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant words...'you' and 'want' are exactly what make a home!
ReplyDeleteVicki,
ReplyDeleteI just read your piece at 'la belette rouge' and I loved it!! BUT...there was one line that jumped off the page/screen at me.."that maybe there was a home somewhere else for me that I was yet to discover"...this sentence explains exactly how I have been feeling...I feel so comfortable in France, more so than here in Australia...Not sure if it is because my father was from Europe??...but every time I visit France it is like going/coming home!!...I'm sure you understand what I mean.

Enjoyed reading your guest post over at Belette's Vicki,(even though I'm a total non-traveller myself) x
ReplyDeleteHeading over to read your interview. I love interviews.
ReplyDeleteBTW - mail received today.
Merci Madame,

I loved your piece Vicki. It was so thoughtful and really made me think. I did reply in length to it at La Belette Rouge (a terrific site and so thanks for pointing me to it as well!) 'Home' is always a tricky one for me. We have been forced to consider the two bedroom brick terrace we have loved for so long no longer serves us as a family due to its small size. It is a house but not a home. Travelling as much as I have done it is difficult to know where 'home' truly is. I always stumble a bit with the concept of 'home'.xx
ReplyDeleteThank you Vicki so much.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful read.

Thanks for sharing this! I really enjoyed this post!
ReplyDeleteJust lovely Vicki..... a have a very similar sentiment. Home for me is where my boys are. My 2 sons and my hubby. I would live in a box on the school oval if I had to.... as long as I have my darlings with me and we are safe and well..... and well fed! A-M xx PS As I am selling my little creation soon, I probably will be doing the box thing there for a while!
ReplyDeleteThis is exciting! I'm heading over there right now... :):):)
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific post about home, that place we all yearn for. And thanks for introducing La Belette Rouge! I've already bookmarked her wonderful blog.
ReplyDeleteFor me, any house could become a home, as long as my children run through it, my husband cooks the meals, and family and friends are over far into the night.
Vicki, what a true inspiration for those of us still learning to live in the flow. How blessed I am to have your inspiring posts to get me going in the morning.
ReplyDeleteOh Vicki, your story of home and house is so honest and open. Thank you for sharing it and Thanks to La Belette Rouge for asking you too. There is a song by Paul Young called "Wherever I lay my Hat, that's my home" one of my all time favorite songs and your guest post reminds me of that. Hugs, Margie.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant blog! Just discovered via YSL guy.
ReplyDeleteI laughed out loud upon reading your note that you were "confused" about home.
ReplyDeleteIn my previous life .. (previous marriage) , I recognized a major case
of Home Confusion - due to the fact that we had 6 houses ! Though I loved each one, as one would love 6 children, I found it difficult to find a single place that my heart
could truly call H O M E .
On those few occasions when I would attempt to explain this .. . . I
was met with blank stares. The implication being "Lady, I should have your problems!"
I'm just back from reading your letter and when i'm thinking about that I realize that for me, Home is where love is. Very simple isn't it. simply need to be loved and be in love. Not so simple in fact!
ReplyDeleteA bientôt.
Christian.

Hello Vicki,
ReplyDeleteI love this idea and I am off to read your guest blog. You always inspire me and give me a fresh, new perspective. I can't wait to see.

Judith~
A beautiful piece, so eloquently written Vicki. Your 'home' heart has found it's true place, no doubt about it. I'm a little worried though, as sometimes I've walked into an amazing hotel suite somewhere in the world & thought 'Oooh, I could live here forever & I wouldn't miss one thing from home!'
ReplyDeleteMillie ^_^
Oh Vicki, I just loved reading your blog about home on La Belette Rouge. What a wonderful adventure you have had. Thanks for sharing that with us - it was very inspiring! I'll go back to my dreaming now, sigh .......
ReplyDeleteVicki! Your guest post really spoke to me. Like you, I caught the travel bug at an early age and have been traveling the world my whole life. I've lived on 3 continents and countless homes but wherever I am, I nest. I've known many people who are wanders and many who are nesters but very few who are both. So I feel like we're kindred spirits in that way. I have a feeling that eventually, I will also find that one place where I'll finally calm and settle down. Thanks so much for sharing your story. xoxo, alek
