besides ballet flats and 10cm killer heels are Converse All Star trainers. I always thought of them as a very French thing - the skinny jeans, the tightly belted trench coat and the Converse - sort of like a Parisian uniform for all.
But actually they are very much an American thing.
In 1908 Marquis M. Converse opened the Converse Rubber Shoe Company in Massachusetts and by 1910 was producing more than 4,000 pairs of rubber soled shoes a day. In 1915 came the tennis shoes and two years later Converse designed and produced the world's first performance basketball shoes - the All Star.
I tend to wear white ones in summer and black ones in winter with the occasional pink pair thrown in when I really want to shake things up a bit; I know.... I should be less staid, break out and try the other brights or even the metallics.
The beauty of the Converse trainer - they are for everyone, there is no no age or gender discrimination. Each and every colour or pattern is acceptable so there are no taste or fashion police issues on that score. They look cute with pretty much everything - skinny jeans, wide pants or if you are leggy enough, shorts and short skirts. High tops or regular style - both equally de la rigueur on the streets, although thinking about it maybe high tops have a slight edge. There is only one strictly enforced rule when it comes to wearing Converse and this is the great inverse of the Converse....they must be well worn, preferably dirty and slightly beaten up.
The moral of this story... I am off to buy a new pair and the adventure seeker that I am thinks she might splash out and go for.... silver. But don't worry, I won't be flashing them in public until I have well and truly scuffed them up in the privacy of my own home, xv.

Oh....you are taking me back to when I used to buy these for my son, and then his friend who looked so sad when he saw them...in bright turquoise. One of their favorite friend photo is the two of them wearing their All-Stars. I never had a pair, maybe I should be more cool! Buy the silver!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute story. I hope you find the silver cons you're searching for. Bon chance!

I have white ones and they are the bomb!
ReplyDeleteBut those pink are tempting me...
PINK Staid? I don't think so - and they have to be dirty and beat up?
ReplyDeleteinteresting.
You know you can create your own, right?

oh i know that feeling well when i have a new pair of chuck taylors and they are way too white! they scuff quickly though. have fun wearing them in!
ReplyDeletei do love the way they look, and that skinny jeans, trench image is tempting me to go get some. but i find them terribly uncomfortable. i have a VERY high arch and it spazzes out on me if i don't support it. and now a days they are very expensive. i just bought some grey ones for my husband that were 70 bucks!! chucks?!?!!!

You make everything tres' chic...I have never considered these, I have short stocky legs (ok they are muscular) and just assumed I would look even shorter!
ReplyDeleteBut, you have definitely piqued my interest.
Thanks for making me smile - I hope you find silver. :)
I love Converse sneakers! I priced a pink pair in Paris and they were so much more expensive there, of course. But worth it!

I just bought my first pair of Converse this weekend. I went with low-rise. Love them. Not sure what took me so long to try them.
ReplyDeleteSo funny Vicki~ Just this weekend while in NY, my sister and I went shoe shopping-I was looking for a cute pair of ballet flats...
ReplyDeleteWhen my search came up empty, I turned the corner and there were red Converse high-tops. I said to my sister- "this is what I really should get". Are they as comfy as they look?
Love the Chucks!!
ReplyDeleteShelly
I love Converse. I have a pair of red tartan ones that I love with a passion. Kind of a Bay City Rollers look, but who cares!
ReplyDeleteAh, yes --- - the Converse hi tops are a natural to round out the spikey heels & ballet flats.
ReplyDeleteI'd add just one more pair to complete the wardrobe: the classic
Havaianas flip flops for the beach.
Jjjj
My little one wears his all of the time (so cute)! He has the classic Black "chucks" and the cutest pair of Brown plaid!I've never worn them ,but now I'm rethinking it! Great post, good luck with your search!

I love it:O)Proffite de la vie....
ReplyDeleteThanks for the style heads-up comment while cycling Vicki! You are absolutely right...I never thought about them that way. I have been using a pair of sleek ivory slip-ons I bought in Paris, but they have had their day, sadly. I'll try my cycle-stylin in a whole new way.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing puppy Apple destroyed during her teething stage? My old and so comfortable, pair of Converse. Twas a sad day for all.
ReplyDeleteAww...those are a classic! I love the white ones in the summer with white or gray linen pants, or even jeans
ReplyDeleteLove my Chucks! I have SO many pairs!
ReplyDeleteI think we have all had a pair of these in our lifetime - even me!!
ReplyDeleteAlison
Great story! I bought my first pair of Converse in Hong Kong last year - they're white ones & I have absolutely worn them to death. I think I'll treat myself to a grey pair for the Winter. Lee :)
ReplyDeleteOh so chic Vicki! Stay with the brights for your new pair, Lime Green or Turquoise or similar - white is just so blahhhh.
ReplyDeleteI live in my Birkenstock flip-flops all summer & surprised everyone with my last pair, Silver leather with little silver diamantes on the buckles. Although I've had some Birkenstock die-hards do the tut-tut thing at me at the Stirling Woolies Supermarket!
Millie ^_^
what a great post... i lived in these when i was little...
ReplyDeleteNothing is as chic as a pair of worn in Converse trainers. Every woman should be given a pair in her favourite colour by the government. Do you not agree?
ReplyDeleteThose are pretty cool in pink, I must say.
ReplyDeletelove em... like you i love the strappies but there's nothing like a classic all star
ReplyDeleteLove them. Always a classic and always personal.
ReplyDeleteLove this post. I have a pair of turquoise that are one of the few things I will not let any of my girls borrow. As with everything else, they would never return and I LOVE them!
ReplyDeleteMy best Parisienne friend swears by Converse. I have to get me some PDQ
ReplyDeleteHuh! I bought a silver pair last year and my daughter stole them!!
ReplyDeleteLoved them. Have fun.
How great that after 100 years something is still so cool and fashionable... truly a signe of great design!
ReplyDeleteMy dad still swears that the only was to play basketball is with your converse hightops on:-)
ReplyDeleteOooo la la! I have two pair of Chuckers I've had forever. One of the original color and another with red, white and blue stripes.
ReplyDeleteI love wearing them ........
I'm with you - if it's not ballet flat or sky high heels, it's Converse. I have an entire collection.
ReplyDeleteI love my converse and try never to leave home without them!
ReplyDeleteBetsy
You never fail to surprise me. I wouldn't have seen you as a worn-in, dirty converse wearer. I'd love to see a photo of you in your silver ones! You have me salivating at the thought of the pink ones but they look so comfortable. I'm afraid I would never take them off! I wonder if they are related to the old gym-boot? I used to love my gym-boots worn with bobby dazzler socks!
ReplyDeletep.s. i have some silver leather ones that I adore as well!
ReplyDeleteOoohh i love my pink converse!!! Mine are around 8 years old and they look better every year they get older. I once saw a pair in zebra stripe but they were a size too small (i almost still bought bought them!!) I have been hunting my size in them ever since, *le sigh*. I'm liking the idea of silver, i would love some gold for summer (really beaten up gold btw)X ER X
ReplyDeleteOh guess what, I have just bought my very first pair of Converse trainers on Tuesday!! They're dark blue and I love them, I'm feeling very hip indeed! Thanks for the tip on trench coat, I did wonder if they go...
ReplyDeleteDefinitely blog worthy so if you don't mind I'll introduce mine on my blog shortly :-)
I love my red converse!
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
Love this post on converse. Who knew they were popular all over the world!
ReplyDeleteCute blog:)
Cute story ! I love this picture and I love the way parisians wear converse but I don't use them
ReplyDeletewow...I used to have a bright yellow pair in high school? college? I just got a pair of converse/jack purcell white ones (which look amazing with rumpled khakis)so maybe I'll have to branch out and add a high tops pair to them.
ReplyDeleteI hope I get to see these new kicks vicki, shiny shoes oooooow...have you checked out the Lanvin pumps...amazing they are!!! you could thread a gros-grain trim through the laces to get that girly chic feel Lanvin style! shiny shoes xxx
ReplyDeletei love chucks! my favorite pairs have been my kermit green pair and a wonderful pair of yellow chucks - alas both only loving memories. currently I have two pairs of high tops - one a wonderful burgundy color and the other a limited edition grateful dead 'fashion chuck' (the later I don't want to wear as I don't want to dirty the wonderful illustrations on the shoes...skulls and roses - of course)
ReplyDeleteI've been hankering for a pair of pink chucks for years. you go girl!!
Only the French can make everything look stylish! I have one pair of black Converse and I wear them with long jeans. Wish I could pull off the pink!
ReplyDeleteGood content. Just wanted to add some buying advice for those on a budget.
ReplyDeleteThere is a huge market for sports shoes but what’s significant is the genuineness of the shoes we intend to buy. Most often we think that a pair of authentic shoes would cost us big money and so we turn to fake shoes which are available at very low prices not realizing the consequences of wearing them in the long run.
However, you will be happy to know that you can still get genuine sports shoes at cheap prices. The only thing that we require is a little bit of research to know which stores stock original stuff and offer good discounts that make genuine shoes affordable and fit our budget. So spend sometime and research online to find where you can shop around, how you can shop and when is the best time to shop.
Converse trainers rock! Honestly, the pink ones are nice, but the best ones have surely got to be the all black ones? But lets be honest, whatever colour or style, they are really nice sneakers.
ReplyDeleteActually, you might be interested in the young art challenge the BBC held - one of the contestants designed custom converses with sausages and eggs on them! Was pretty sweet.
Glad to see someone mention gym boots! Are they an Aussie version of these. I would like a pink pair but silver sounds delish!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter wears a pair of low rise green ones and my 2 year old grandson has a couple of pairs of high tops and always gets comments on how cute he looks. So you have convinced me it is now my turn.
