Mirror Mirror on the Wall

Au miroir, mon beaux miroir
dit qui ai la plus belle?

I can't choose - I think both these sunburst mirrors are very pretty. The differences are slight - the carving on the sun's rays and the borders around the glass are not the same but on first glance they almost look like a pair. Fashioned after the style of Louis XIV - France's Sun King - they gained popularity at the end of the 19th and early 20th Centuries.

I am a 'gilt' junkie and permanently on the lookout for any kind of tired, or I prefer to think well loved, frame. Isn't it strange how we are always attracted to similar kinds of objects when browsing around? I always gravitate to anything with an original gilt frame - paintings, engravings and mirrors included. I like to imagine the history of the mirror, the images that were reflected, and I like to study closely the details of the engravings and place them in the interior that they would have once belonged.

Gilding is an ancient art and involves applying a thin layer of gold leaf to a surface. The mirrors and the frames that I search for would have been gilded by hand. A wafer thin sheet of gold leaf would have been applied over a painted finish called gesso, which has an adhesive, sticky quality  - oftentimes the gesso would have been a terra cotta red colour - and the transparency of the gold leaf would allow the richness of the red to show through. As the gilding wears over time, more and more of the gesso appears - that is the patina I love, a soft slightly dull gold finish with a rosy tone.

It's that, 'I can see forever' kind of a day in Provence - the sun is shining, there isn't a cloud in the sky and the temperatures are rising. Sunbursts seemed just the thing to talk about, xv.

  3. These are both beautiful sunburst mirrors that would look wonderful on the wall catching and reflecting rays of sunlight. I also love it when the actual mirror is aged, worn and flecked - simply gorgeous when teamed with a lovely, dull gold frame.

  4. Oh yes I love mirrors, and old mirrors are always the best.
I love the top one the most - the sun's rays look more like wheat sheaves to me - gorgeous.
By the way, loved you last post and the beautiful treasures you found at the markets.

  5. I love these mirrors too. I've been coveting a small French one from a gorgeous antique shop near our farmhouse (of all places!).

  6. Both mirrors are pretty, but if I had to choose I like the second one the lines are a little softer to me. Keep us posted on which one you decide.

Enjoy and have a golden day!
P.S. Everytime I peak on your site- I swear I can smell the lilac scent of the candle!!

  8. I have one of these beauties that sorta falls into the lines of the first one, but I have to say, I much prefer the second ... not sure why, maybe because the slightly more linear look to the lines of the burst? Ah - I'm sure whatever you choose will look magnificent! :)

  9. I love gilt and time worn looks as well. The Italian Florentine items in particular. The older and crackleyer the better!!! Love your blog....Tiina...

  10. What a lovely blog! I am a confessed Frankophile smitten with all things French. I was fortunate to visit France for the first time last spring, (I was in the Pyrenees), and am longing to go back. But until then, I will be gleaning vicarious pleasure from your posts.
    Thank you!

  12. I share your love of old, worn gilded frames....these mirrors are both beautiful but the first makes me swoon...

I was looking at your "finds"....how lovely are they??? those linens, another obsession of mine, are just amazing...such beautiful embroidery, simply not done anymore! YUM!

The countryside looks very much like where I live in northern California...I am looking forward to spring and can't wait to see what turns up on your blog! I just signed up for your feed so as to not miss a thing.

Those almond branches sounded lovely and inspired me to go see what's going on in my neck of the woods.

  15. My favorite is the top mirror .. I also love the look of a mirror that has an aged, gold frame. I have a huge mirror in my bedroom propped in a corner on the floor .. perhaps it's time for me to 'play' with it a bit?

  17. I would have to say get them both :) While they look good alone, the are spectacular together, playing off one another's qualities. Gorgeous.
I'm with you on the affinity with the history of items - it's one of the most attractive and magnetic qualities, and always draws me in like a siren's song.
Enjoy your beautiful day - it was like that here yesterday - Spring singing her best song. Today - Grey skies and the birds are definitely calling for rain. We shall see if it comes to pass!

  26. Bonjour,

    Greetings from Paris

  27. I'm a gilt junkie, too. I just LOVE it. At first, I liked the second one, then I changed my mind and now I can't decide. That was helpful, wasn't it?

  28. Both are indeed lovely--and I know what you mean about gravitating towards the same sort of thing when you're out and about. I would have a house full of mid-century danish dining chairs if the huz would let me.

and wentworth miller from prison break? what I wouldn't give for an hour alone in a room with him! yum yum!

  29. I am falling in love with one on top. Vicki, you put a magic touch on things and now you're making me want one too.

  30. These beauties have such a timeless appeal Vicki. They would look good just about anyplace/anywhere. I would actually want to linger in front of these lovelies, which is something I generally eschew since I turned 50!
Make sure you do something ad fab on your perfect Provencal day.

  31. dear vicki..

je preferer le premier un???(une)?? (comprendez vous??)..

anyway!! you are getting me to practice my french...which is pretty rusty~!! but I am liking doing it..
BUT i have probably made a TOTAL FOOL of myself!!

I just think the first one has a little more "OOMPH" to it...a little more depth..AND a little bit different..

    BUT both are lovely..
glad it is a lovely day...(ps..an aussie melb update...we had something fall from the sky today..!! YES some rain!!...BUT cleared up quickly...overcast but quite humid for melbourne.)..

    au revoir..

    xx andrea

  32. sorry vicki...ME again...

I meant to add that I think the second mirror is kind of much MORE HARSH in its appearance if you know what I mean..??

I like the differing appearance of the first...not quite soo clinical/harsh..

    xx andrea

  34. Such beautiful mirrors, I agree the older more worn, the better it is.xx

  35. both mare stunning...how can you choose?!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  36. That gesso is actually made of rabbitskin glue and red bole powdered pigment. Gold leaf sheets are soooo sticky they stick to your fingers. Maybe that's why chefs can add it onto their chocolates etc.
    I'd choose numero uno..

  37. Don't resist...have both !
    bonne journée au soleil...

  44. I like the top one the best! Years ago, before the resurgence of the starburst mirror trend, I purchased the most beautiful antique starburst mirror for my living room. It was the most money I had ever spent on a decorative item, and I have never regret the purchase - I look at it every day and admire it!

  45. These mirrors are so original and beautiful. They make me think of Louis the Roi Soleil.

  46. Oh I love them both. But the second would be my little sunshine. :-)

  47. I believe I have a mirror in every room of our home (except for the kitchen). We also have a little collection of these at our store since they are so wonderful.
