best paris stories...

I have just downloaded Best Paris Stories on my Kindle... I am thinking that these essays would be the perfect read for all those very dull times when I am waiting...  in the traffic, at the airport, for an appointment... Life is so much about 'waiting'... I have decided to make the most of it... A short story, a snippet about Paris, an interlude in my favourite city... an entertaining and worthwhile escape I thought... xv

For some, Paris is home, for others, merely a dream. For Gaston, it is a bench, the anchor of his life. For Sue, a romantic city filled with scandalous, dark-eyed men, for Frank an all-consuming fire, for Mme Santinelli a ghost she'd hoped to forget. By turns humorous, bittersweet, historical or surreal, each of these carefully selected stories invites us to explore a different facet of Paris.

BEST PARIS STORIES brings together the winning short stories of the 2011 Paris Short Story Contest with works by Jeannine Alter, Bob Levy, Lisa Burkitt, Nafkote Tamirat, Marie Houzelle, Jo Nguyen, Julia Mary Lichtblau, Mary Byrne, Marie Houzelle, Jane M. Handel, and Jim Archibald.

  1. Oh thank you for this - I don't have a Kindle - but will look for the Book online as I doubt that this will make it to Australian shores in the next few months - if at all. I love hot tips on good books ! Also love your blog - it's part of my weekly fix of all good things French! Francesca x

  4. Bonjour Vicki!

Oh you are like me. If all I have is a brochure, a receipt, ANYTHING on my person while I am stuck somewhere waiting, I READ IT! I got so used to this practice when studying French that I still do it in whatever language is in front of me that I can read!

I hope to do a Paris link party after Mother's Day. It would be lovely if you participated! In the meantime, thank you so much for visiting me once I got my real post up!

    A BIENTÔT! Anita

  5. This sounds like one for me to buy - I travel regularly and a good short story is perfect at the airport and a change from the magazines I often carry with me.

Nice suggestion. Am seeing how to get kindle on my ipad now. If you're in Paris over the next few weeks, I'd love to meet for coffee. I didn't see how else to contact you on your site.

  9. This sounds exactly like something I would like to read...I am guessing you have already read Penelope Rowlands' selection of stories about Paris, I really enjoyed that too.

I was just browsing in a local bookshop this afternoon, saw "The Paris Wife" and thought of you! I am already mentally putting together my reading list for France Summer 2012 ;) XX

  13. thanks for this introduction to the book which i will get my hands on. i remember seeing a contemporary artist's exhibit (online not in person, boo hoo) a few years back, and his subject was waiting. i was mesmerized, and you have reminded me of that mood which is so human and so mundane, but not without meaning.

    smiles.
