paris and books...

Bookshops are the best shops... that is my loaded and extremely biased opinion...but I think it's true. In Paris I have a favourite, Librairie Galignani on the rue de Rivoli. It is just opposite the Place Colette entrance to the Palais Royale so perfect people watching is guaranteed before or after the book browsing.

Reading is a strange commodity...To read to one's heart's content is the greatest luxury of all yet at the same time reading is one of life's basic essentials and something that we take for granted every day.

Reading for pleasure...that's my weekend planned......xv

  2. I love going to book shops with my daughter. We spent an hour or so in Shakespeare and Co. in Paris and she marveled at all the books...A book store for my daughter is like the best sort of medicine...the look of sheer delight as she scans over all the dust covers is pure joy. Take care c xx

  5. I am so excited to see this post Vicki. Love this book store. Hot chocolate at Angelina's on a cold winter's morning and a long wander in this book shop is a fond memory from our last visit to Paris. I came across 'Cafe Society' by Thierry Coudert in this bookshop. It is now sitting in one of my favourite spots in our home ( alongside yours) with fond memories of Paris.

Best wishes for a fab weekend.

  6. My ideal week end! to get lost in a book is one of life's precious moment. I also now resort to the Ipad when traveling, it is always loaded with an ample supply of books.
    Have a great week end,
    Francine

  7. I love the smell of books too, especially well aged ones. Just having them around is somehow soothing as well. Would love to visit your Paris bookshop.
    Happy reading.

  8. Vickie, thanks for this post. While in Paris two weeks ago, my traveling companion, Kathy Morris and I happened to pass by Shakespeare & Company and noticed that Tatiana de Rosnay was giving a reading that night. What luck! As most people know by now, she is the author of "Sarah's Key" which is on the best seller lists. Tatiana gave a reading of her recent book, "A Secret Kept", and she reads as beautifully as she writes. It was a lovely experience, found only by good luck.

Must also add that Shakespeare has a reading almost weekly and lectures quite often. When in Paris, it's always worthwhile checking out their website. You meet the most interesting people while there.

  17. I am with you on the bookstores. Sadly, they are closing up around here. Reading is the ultimate pleasure, escape, joy and adventure. Books. Happily, my nose is always in one. Bookstores - I wish there were more of them! :)

  22. Have a great weekend Vicki, I love to visit book shops. We have several in Camden, I rember the first time I went in there in the 60's loved the smell, at that time they had pin and inks of whaling ships, and some very old books on this
    area. Love history.

  24. So true! My greatest pleasure is to browse a bookstore, preferable hidden, old and romantic, filled with treasures ....
And to think of that some do not like to read.... Unthinkable!
    What a loss!
Your bookstore looks like one I would love to discover one day for myself!
Will mark it down for me!
It's always like diving in to a secret world unfolding in our imagination!
    Have a wonderful Sunday evening!

  25. Do you know, Vicki, I think that I get as much pleasure browsing in a bookshop as I do from reading a book. I can be in the bookshop as long as it takes me to read a book as well !! Haha. XXXX

  28. Bookshops are my favorite places to be. When my kids were little we would hang out in bookshops and as adults now, they are avid readers - I love it! xxoo :)

  29. What a sad day it would be if the digital tsunami caused the demise of the small, quaint bookshops in cities around the world. These should be marked as "treasures" in all city maps and as Cathi pointed out above... they will keep influencing children for generations to come....

  30. I agree, Vicki! There is something so magical about bookstores. When I browse in them I feel so much calmer. I am not a fan of the Kindles and never will be. Give me a bookstore and a book any day and I am in heaven. xx
