what's on my french desk today...

I like to work with 'my' mess around me. Always so many books...for inspiration, to cure restlessness, to learn... and my blackberry...having that little gadget close by makes me feel as if am in contact with my three lovelies in London. My sunglasses are always at the ready in case I can't concentrate and need to go outside for a wander - these shiny April days are not making it easy. My handbag is full of useless and useful goodies, complete with chequebook.  Is there anywhere else other than France where cheques are the preferred mode of payment? Postcards from Judith and Lynn are held together by a pair of fine 'hands' given to me by one of the DD's best friends...love those.

And lilac, the first bunch from the garden this year.

What's on your desk today? xv

  2. Hmmm...our desks are looking very similar :) Stacks of books...(yours inc.), postcards waiting to be written for my friends at Collage of Life, magazine and newspaper tear sheets of things to see and do around London, lots of brochures for boarding schools :( , a few candles, an antique lamp and written reminders to stay focused and on task...which I should be doing now...

Off to cut some flowers from the garden...you never cease to inspire Vicki :)

  5. What a lovely vignette. The lilacs make the entire setting! I adore the vase they are in. What's on my desk? Too much! It needs a thorough cleaning. I'm afraid my desk at home is not as neat at the one at the office.

  6. I too, am surrounded by books! They are so much a part of my life. I was in the hospital last year and insisted my daughter bring me a pile of books.
I told her it didn't matter which ones. I will reread them and it will feel like home. Oh and flowers are an essential too. Love your lilacs. My favorite, it is to soon for them here.

  7. On my desk? a mess, an awful mess as always and certainly not worth being photographed, unlike yours !

  8. I am not sure I would be brave enough to share a photo of my desktop with everyone but, suffice it to say, it has piles of books and magazines and several rose balls for their nice, subtle scent.

  9. Your desk is tres elegant! I would have to tidy mine up before I would take any photographs and move my little doggy to the side! we dont have Lilac in Brisbane - how beautiful it is.

  14. ..A berry-apricot candle, two cups of coffee, apple for snack later, my blackberry and of course my organizer (can't leave without it anywhere!:) I've noticed that working in a little mess on desk is more productive by the end of day.. and make you feel cozy being in the office:)

Thank you for a wonderful blog, Vicki!

  17. Like you I'm surrounded by my little mess of things but nothing quite so elegant as your lilacs, one of my favorite flowers. Happy Thursday!

  18. Oh, the lilacs! Gorgeous! We are still in the camellia-magnolia-daffodil stage of spring, so lilacs are weeks away.
I just found a sweet little vintage elephant for my desk--I thought having a paper weight would encourage me to organize all the papers scattered about. Not yet, but the elephant makes me happy!

  19. Mi escritorio no admites fotos...

  26. O.K., you just killed me with that gorgeous bunch of lilac. Lilac is my favorite scent and flower. In Michigan and New York I had huge lilac bushes right outside my window. Lilacs don't grow in the South and I miss it terribly. Major....sigh. Another reason I need to move to France someday...

  30. Dear Vicki, your gorgeous desk is bare compared to my desk...and mine is bare compared to the mountain that my husband calls a desk. I need way more order ...maybe I need to use yours as a model. : )
I still write checks, but trying to limit that.
Wishing you a great rest of the week!

  31. Love seeing all of your desk accoutrements...especially the lilacs! Our desks become such a part of us, you can always tell what's happening in a persons life just by looking at what they have on it at the moment. For me right now, I have the mess, but it's not as pretty as yours...tax time! I do have a very special handmade gift that a dear fellow blogger sent to me as a surprise, an old enamel pot filled wth pens, a coaster with the eiffel tower on it that was a gift from France and my oversized transferware teacup continually filled with coffee, those are the nice things...the rest, papers!
    Enjoy your beautiful spring...

  32. Lilacs! So jealous, I haven't seen them yet this year but I did see some coquelicots the other day. :)

I think that my too tidy desk means that I don't have enough going on in my life! But, there are a few of my favorite things including tiny shells found on a beach in Vanuatu after a hurricane and a Buddha.

  33. Lilacs how wonderful...I have a small plate that says Paris and has the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Arc de Triomphe and other scenes that I love..I rest my porcelain Paris coffee cup on it. It is white with a black Eiffel tower. I am reminded of Paris every day.

Also being a natural perfumer I always have a small vial or bottle of an eau de parfum or raw material. Today I have cassie absolute and orange blossom absolute.

  34. A huge mess - that's what's on my desk at the moment. But normally, like you I have books and magazines and now I think I'm going to add flowers - yours are so beautiful - I don't have lilacs anymore - I miss their wonderful fragrance!!

  35. Dear Vicki,
What a wonderful 'mess' to be in !! Memories of friend's, the wonderful perfume of lilac and a connection with your precious daughter's here in London. A 'PERFECT ' desk.
Many thanks for your 'welcome back' comment. You are a true blogging friend. XXXX

  37. Hi Vicki,
I am so jealous of your messy desk!! I work from home running my own scheduling company and my desk is just full of sticky notes, random papers and journals. Writing is a hobby of mine and I started a blog recently about the humor in motherhood. I don't know why but I LOVE France. I've never been there but have recently started refreshing my French and am experimenting with French dishes both of which I need to start blogging about. My dream is to visit both Paris and Provence one day and take pastry classes! A girl can dream can't she!

  38. On my desk right now is my small computer, a copy of "Howards End," a stack of cookbooks, including a new one from Ottolenghi in London, my red Filofax (feels so old fashioned), a framed photo of my daughter at her college graduation, and some pretty little containers for stamps and things. Missing? Definitely flowers! You inspired me.

  42. Stacks of tax papers to be filed, stacks of music to be put away after the wild Irish harp playing season, a new pair of grey suede platform heels with a black suede strap...and lots of notes waiting to be turned into scenes for the book I'm writing, that will now get my full attention!

  43. I just love lilac but havn't seen it for years. I used to have a lilac tree in a previous home, would love another but where to put it is the question. Love your clutter xx

  44. A lovely mess indeed, i like it. I have tons of no so adorably scattered on my desk right now, a cup of coffee, a scent of magnolias in bloom and tons of memo pads. Love being workaholic and messy. P.S. I do clean up.

  45. I smell the lilacs from across the pond...........a perfume from childhood in England, a memory of everything lovely in the garden.

Vicki, I love the disorganized desk........I know it means you are working on something special to show us between your wanderings!

Oh to be back en France as Springtime warms up the beautiful land. Happy day.

  47. Love the picture Vicki. Yesterday I collected a dear little desk that I will set up today in a corner of my bedroom near the window with a view of the lake. I'm looking forward to coming to France in September with Mary Moody. x

  48. Love your desk Vicki! A grey rainy Sunday here so I will have fun setting up my new little cream desk in my bedroom near the window facing the lake to motivate me for some serious writing. Does anyone know where I can find some pretty French looking lamps in Aust? I found two a while ago (pretty cream pleated taffeta lampshades) but procrastinated and they had been sold when I went to buy them!
