'insurance, accidents, fire, life, theft....'
"Madame, Madame.... Madame" came the words out of nowhere.
I had driven into St Rémy early this morning to take a few snaps and do some shopping at the market. The day was blue as blue can be and as flawless as you imagine. I parked the car and remembered that there was a rather worn painted sign nearby that I wanted to photograph.
"Madam, Madam" the voice cried again. I looked up, beyond the advertisement and saw a tiny white head peering down from the first floor balcony of the building.
"What are you doing? What is it that you are doing?" she repeated several times with a serious frown and the slightest of scowls.
"Bonjour Madame" I replied, remembering my manners in the face of her rather officious tone. "I am taking a photograph of this insurance advertisement."
"Why are you doing that? Why would you want to do that?" she replied in as firm a tone as I have heard from one so petite.
"Madame, these signs are unique and so rare to see. I admire the craftsmanship and love the worn patina and the beauty of the colours."
She stood as tall as she could and with an imperious wave beckoned me over to stand below her. I couldn't think of anything that I had done wrong but nevertheless I braced myself for a good telling off.
"You like this sign" she said.
"Yes of course, I think it is a glimpse into the past." I replied, standing my ground.
She motioned me to come closer. I stood gazing up and listened as she related the history of the building. She had lived there for most of her life and the building had been the first insurance business in St Rémy de Provence. Originally there were more painted advertisements inside but now that was the only one remaining. She too loved the sign from a sentimental point of view and was surprised that someone would deem it worthy to photograph.
I clicked off a few more photographs and watched her serious face brighten up. She smiled warmly as she waved me goodbye. I thought to myself that beauty is not always behind the lens but more often in the chance encounters we stumble upon in our search for the shot.
I think we made each other's day. xv

ReplyDeleteWaht a wonderful story! It is so nice that you are now privvy to the history behind the sign. I love old signs such as this.
ReplyDeleteThat is such a wonderful story!
ReplyDeleteI love it when you get the chance to find out the true history & more importantly the true value of something not of this time :-)

I live for these side stories that become remembered almost more than the sign will be! I often find myself playing mind games with people or things that I want to photograph. I try hard in markets not to make eye contact and just hold my camera up and snap away. But, if the person smiles or looks interested...yay for me! A chance encounter to remember. Human nature observed.
ReplyDeleteOne of the wonderful stories in all days life! Beautiful story Vicki!!

Well, you made my day.
ReplyDeleteIt's true we do have some of the most wonderful experiences in this country and they seem to unfold. Beautifully recounted as always.

What a lovely story! And good for you for persevering and to such a delightful outcome. I find that also in Munich - Europeans tend to be more guarded but then when you awaken something it is truly wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThat gave me goosebumps! What a nice little "vignette" of a story! It was a good reminder to me to expect the best in people...
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely story. You made my day!
ReplyDeleteMerci Vicki!
I love how you share your stories of life with us, so interesting, with drama & a smile. Thank you...
ReplyDelete... lovely story ... so true ... this is why I prefer to travel to Europe alone .. you talk so so many people who would otherwise not engage you.
ReplyDeleteJust loved your picture but even more the story behind it. Isn't life unexpectedly delicious? Thanks you for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteBest~

Great story! There is nothing worse than the sound of an angry French woman telling you not to do something. I'm glad you calmed her and she softened up and felt a mutual appreciation for such a simple yet beautiful sign!
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet encounter...you made her day!
ReplyDeleteV..Oh how I loved that story. Love to you from S. CA. xxpeggybraswelldesign.com

ReplyDeleteloved this yvonne
Hi Vicki great story but do we get to see it please ? fay xx
ReplyDeleteHow sweet! I am sure that in all her years, she has seen so much of the familiar, disrespected and taken for granted and must have been quite surprised that a person of a younger age would admire and value something that was not new and high-tech. ~Leena~
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful encounter. I love the coloration on the sign. Is one side more worn than the other or is that the play of light and shadow? Also, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your blog. I just started mine 3 days ago and yours has been an inspiration for me.
ReplyDeleteOh Vicki...what a delightful story. Was handing on every word, wondering how you were going to be scolded. The outcome made us laugh!!! We needed that.
ReplyDeleteYour encountered another dimension and layer to the photograph - thank you!!....B:)
ReplyDeleteChance encounters can make all the difference...once I was standing on the platform of the train station in Nice and wondered whether I was on the right train to Monaco...I asked a well-dressed girl in French and she answered in English! I was so relieved as we were both from New Jersey and she came over to Monaco with me and we had dinner and then met up the next day. Two travelers alone with a serendipitous meeting. :)
ReplyDeleteVicki - beautiful photo...even more beautiful story!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad there is someone else out there (you) that take's pictures of signs too! Great photo and loved the story. I love looking at picture and remembering all the details.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful sign and I agree, the encounters are even more beautiful when you're shooting.

What a wonderful story. I do love talking to people, especially older people. They have such stories and unfortunately most people do not take the time to listen.
ReplyDeleteI was reading this on the old Crackberry in the QC @ at Syd. Airport yesterday arvo & was grimacing as I progressed down the post 'cos I was thinking 'Oooooh this isn't going to have a happy ending'. When I got to the end I breathed a very large audible sigh of relief, so much so the bloke sitting next to me gave me a very dirty look, got up & moved! See what effect your posts have on boring, stuffy old business men on the other side of the world Vicki! Love your work.

I love talking to folks when I'm out shooting. We're all so busy, we rarely take the time to connect. That's one reason I'm out shooting in the first place!
