Laughter is the best cure for anything and everything plus let's hope it burns calories too... If you feel like laughing go and see the latest French film folly, Potiche, which translates as 'trophy wife'. This kooky almost corny movie is set in the '70s and stars Catherine Deneuve, Fabrici Luchini and a rather rotund Gérard Depardieu (that was a disappointment as I always had a crush on him...but despite the expanding girth and flabby jowls his voice is enough to make any girl give up her day job and throw caution to the wind...)
I don't want to ruin the plot but let's just say that Potiche follows all the well known ingredients that French comedies are renowned for ...deeply felt sentiments, fuelled emotions, unrequited love and above and beyond discussion of feelings..with the added advantage of a fun soundtrack and some major '70's hairdos....
It is a very happy way to spend a couple of hours....xv

Oh I've read a good review about this film from another blog, and now I'm really interested to watch it. And just the title itself intrigues me already, plus Ms. Catherine is really a fine actress.

Therefore, I must try and see this film. Maybe my sister and I can go and see it while I am staying with her over the next couple of weeks. XXXX

This movie looks hilarious.
I think the last phrase sums the theme of this movie well when Deneuve's husband says, "so now I'm your trophy husband!"
The emotions behind this statement during the 70s could create quite an intense and comical atmosphere, perfect for a French film.

ReplyDeleteJust wanted to say that, as usual at this time of year, I am glued to the television, watching every last drop of Wimbledon. I have been many times over the years but missed out on tickets this year. It doesn't really bother me though....if I get them, then that's great and I get to see live tennis and, if I don't, then I just watch it on tele and get to hear all of the commentary.....and eat my own strawberries and cream and drink my own Champagne !! I don't only enjoy Wimbledon.....I love Roland Garros, the Australian and US Open and all of the tournaments throughout the year. We also love Queen's. Sorry, I'll shut up now. Suffice it to say I love to watch a bit of tennis along with quite a few other sports. XXXX

ReplyDeleteGreat movie. Your review is on the dot. Took my French students to see it when it came out in the US a few months ago. We all had a fabulous time. There was a lot to say about the plot, social context, and characters. La Reine Catherine was amazing. Particularly loved the opening scene as she jogs in the forest (with her hair curlers on) and marvels at the trees and animals. She reminded me of Snow White! Brilliant acting!

ReplyDeleteI saw the trailer for this a few weeks ago and liked the allusions I saw--definitely to Les Parapluies and, I believe, to Peau d'Ane. And no doubt Belle du Jour is referenced too. . .
