thank heaven for little girls...

Thank heaven for little girls

for little girls get bigger every day!
Thank heaven for little girls
they grow up in the most delightful way!
Those little eyes so helpless and appealing
one day will flash and send you crashin' thru the ceilin'
Thank heaven for little girls
thank heaven for them all,
no matter where no matter who
for without them, what would little boys do?
Thank heaven... thank heaven...
Thank heaven for little girls!'

Do you remember Gigi, the movie? The doe eyes of Leslie Caron, the warbling wisdom of Maurice Chevalier as he 'thanked heaven for little girls' and the suave charms of Louis Jourdan as they sang and danced their way around Paris. Based on a Colette novel, this movie directed by Vincent Minnelli, is so delightfully old fashioned and makes for a couple of hours of pure escapism...

No thinking required...a perfect holiday weekend watch.....xv

  3. Vicki, your post has just bought back lovely memories of my dear Dad. He was a Maurice Chevalier fan & as the besotted father of 2 little girls, Dad would often sing this song to my sister & I as were driving in the car with him - he was one of a kind!

  5. I am a new reader of your beautiful blog and can't wait to catch up and read some of your posts. It is funny you just watched Gigi. I almost did last night but finally settled for a very different movie, Le Divorce. Not quite as magical as Gigi (and not quite as good as the novel it was based on) but delightful Leslie Caron plays in that one also. She makes a perfect "French Belle-mere." Have you seen it? - Veronique aka French Girl in Seattle

  8. I too adore old movies and if you are a fan of Leslie Caron, you can even stay in the Chambres D'hotes that she created which is near Burgundy,

  9. An all time favourite movie. But then, Colette would have to be one of the most extraordinary writers of her time. Not sure that the movie picked up the serious tone of the book ~ but they are both fabulous for their own merits.

  22. Such a gorgeous illustration, too! I tend to feel red lipstick wears me rather than the other way around, but this makes me want to try again. Happy Monday, Vicki.

  27. Well, of course I do! I was named after this film by my French father, and years later in my teens I read Colette's novel. To this day, when I meet older gentlemen for the first time, they break out into song upon hearing my name. Sometimes it's "Thank Heaven for Little Girls"; other times it's (much more embarrassingly) the film's title song.

In fact, I've been working on a post about Leslie Caron because I love her so. And it truly is one of my favorite films. I LOVE to sing "I Don't Understand the Parisians," especially while washing dishes. It always makes my husband laugh!

    xoxo Gigi
