On a cold and blustery night I can think of nothing better than a trip to the cinema in Avignon. I have talked about my favourite cinema underneath the Palace of Popes in the old walled city of Avignon - if you would like a little more description please click here.
On Saturday night I went to see Meres et Filles, Mothers and Daughters. This is a film that explores the relationships between three generations of French women. In the 1950's Louise abandoned her children and her marital home and was never seen or heard from again. Her daughter Martine stayed in the small seaside village that she grew up in and became a doctor where she continues her practise. Audrey, Martine's 30 something year old daughter, arrives to spend time with her parents and accidently discovers the diary of her grandmother Louise. So begins an exploration of the relationships between the three women. Beautifully acted, this poignant tale is not a 'feel good' movie but one that poses questions and reflections on relationships - those aspects that we never know and those that we take for granted so frequently. The film is yet to be released with English subtitles and eventhough my French left me stranded at times the superb acting and depth of emotion portrayed by Catherine Deneuve, Marie-Josee Croze and Marina Hands almost made the language irrelevant.
A great watch but for the right mood, xv.

That sounds like a wonderful thing to do on a cold day. I will have to look out for the movie out here too.
I would love to see that!!!
That sounds so interesting, with those actors it would be great.
xx
Sounds fascinating. I'll add it to my list of movies to be watching for. You are so good at sharing your reviews with us and you are always spot-on.
Sounds like a must see - went to see "an education" the other day and felt the same - somehow it wasn't a feel good movie but a " right mood" one.
I will put it on the list.

I think I'd like to see this. I wonder if it will screen here in Brisbane or if I shall have to wait for DVD?
Sounds wonderful. Of course, I'll need to wait for the subtitled version
I so meant to go see this while in Paris but somehow I rarely get to movies except to nap through American films...dommage..
Yes, the relationship between mothers and daughters can be so complex--things left unsaid or spoken too forcefully leave a footprint we could never have imagined. How are the olives??
Fingers crossed this gets a release here- with subtitles- it sounds like just the sort of thing I love. Thanks for the recommendation- my thoughts always turn to film at this time of year
This sounds like a very familiar story. ... especially having just returned from a visit with one of my daughters.
We've always had a "complicated" relationship and now that her daughters are old enough ( 9 & 11) to form their own relationship with me, she seems to view me through very different eyes.
Mothers + Daughters + Granddaughters =
A Fascinating Recipe .

the utopia sounds like a lovely movie viewing experience..
and i enjoy a thought provoking movie!
Sounds like a wonderful movie! I have watched many french films without subtitles and even though my french is ver minimal - the movies still are extremely enjoyable. thanks for sharing this, I look forward to seeing it!
Thank you for the movie recommendation. I am always on the lookout for great films to watch!
Will have to make a note of it - sounds interesting.
Looking forward to it. Thanks.
I love French movies and will go to see it...!

Yay! We have two Utopia's here in Tlse...Think I'll pop over and see it! Thanks for the hint.
oh to be able to go to the theatre to see movies like that. I must netflix, though my husband is not generally a fan of my picks. :(
I love the sound of this movie although I will have to wait for the subtitles. I have however purchased many books and magazines in French and Italian without understanding a word! You are so clever, Vicki! xx
HI!!!
I will have to wait for the english version, as my french is well no french at all!!!haha
hugs,
jamie
Can't wait to see it! Hope you have a lovely week.
I've been a long-time fan of the incredible Catherine D. Her role in Indochine was my all-time fave, & I try & revisit the movie every few years. On viewing it for the first time, it embedded itself so deeply into my subconscious that Catherine in the guise of Eliane, haunted my dreams for many months after. So I look forward to seeing Ms. Deneuve again on your recommendation Vicki.
Millie ^_^
P.S. On our second date, MOTH knowing how much I loved the movie, took me to dinner at the Indochine Cafe in Station Street, Box Hill (Melbourne). As cute as it was, there was no comparision between the 2!
I will have to put that in my Netflix queue... merci for the recommendation!
Hope it's available soon with subtitles - sounds like a story all we mothers would enjoy. Mothering is such a hard job and continues forever - plus it often becomes grandmothering and one feels like it's life repeating itself over again........believe me, I know!!
Ohhhhhhh, that sounds like a winner!
Can't wait to see it..
